2024 Research Fellowship Now Open

Calling all researchers! Our 2024 Brain Tumour Research Fellowship is now open and accepting applications.

We hope this fellowship will help improve the quality of life of patients and survivors, encourage young clinicians and scientists to enter the field of brain tumour research, and accelerate studies leading to a cure of brain tumours.

2024 Research Studentships

Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada raises funds to provide vital services and programs for the brain tumour community. We also lead research into the cause of and cure for this devastating disease through a variety of funding opportunities, including the Brain Tumour Research Studentship. This award provides students opportunities to gain experience in Brain Tumour research and its research methods.

Successful applicants will receive $10,000 over two years ($5,000 per summer). Funding will be granted for students working on projects in June, July and August 2024 and June, July and August 2025 (unless otherwise requested).

Cynthia Hawkins - Project Update

Project Title:

“Investigating treatment targets in the DIPG immune landscape using single cell technology”

Description of Project:

Diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG) are incurable tumours that account for nearly 10% of all pediatric brain cancers. Current therapies are ineffective, and the median survival remains under a year with near 100% fatality.

Project Title:

“Assessing molecular, clinical and imaging predictors of response, quality of life measures and neurocognitive outcomes in young patients with low grade glioma undergoing multimodality therapy”

Description of Project:

Low grade gliomas (LGGs) most commonly occur in adolescents and young adults (15-39 years old).

Treatment strategies are varied and may include a combination of radiation and chemotherapy, and molecular information has helped reframed the role for possible targeted therapies.

Project Title:

“Targeted transition readiness workshops for pediatric brain tumour survivors: Feasibility and preliminary efficacy”

Description of Project:

Survivorship for children diagnosed with brain tumors can include physical, cognitive, and psychosocial challenges.

Routine follow-up care as adults is therefore essential to their longterm health and quality of life outcomes. Adult healthcare settings differ from pediatric settings in placing increased responsibility on the patient to independently plan medical appointments and manage their medical needs. To successfully navigate transition to adult healthcare, it is recommended that youth in pediatric care develop transition readiness skills.

Project Title:

“Radiotherapy and proton beam treatment for childhood brain tumours in Canada”

Description of Project:

Radiation therapy is an important treatment modality in the curative-intent therapy of pediatric brain tumors. It may be delivered either using conventional photon therapy (available in Canada) or proton therapy (not presently available in Canada).

Proton therapy can reduce the dose to normal tissues and decrease long-term toxicities, but requires an out-of-country referral with provincial Ministries of Health approval, and many incidental, out-of-pocket costs for patients and their families.
