NEWS & UPDATES
METRANS is thrilled to share that we’re part of the team awarded a nearly $4M grant by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to test and evaluate curb management strategies as a means to reduce emissions and accelerate advancements in zero-emissions vehicles.

PSR PARTNER UPDATES
In a study funded by the State of California, PSR researchers - UC Davis Professor Susan Handy and Professional Research Dillon Fitch - found that nearly “forty percent of the trips that people make on the Sacramento area’s bike-share system replaced car trips, both in private vehicles and via ride-hail.”

RESEARCH
Failing Malls: Optimizing Opportunities for Housing
The National Center for Sustainable Transportation (NCST) released research findings on mall redevelopment in a report titled Failing Malls: Optimizing Opportunities for Housing led by University of Southern California (USC) Research Professor Hilda Blanco and Research Assistants Buddy Burch, Des Alexander, and Shiqi Tang. Recognizing that the acceleration of online shopping and the increasing trend away from physical mall experiences could lead to large tracts of land becoming available for redevelopment, the researchers sought to determine the feasibility of redeveloping the sites to address California's severe housing deficit.
Developing an Analytical Framework for Optimizing Disaster Relief Preparedness to Coastal Hazards
Recognizing the rising risk of supply chain disruptions as a result of natural disasters, the University of Hawaii at Mānoa and the National Disaster Preparedness Training Center (NDPTC) released a report titled Developing an Analytical Framework for Optimizing Disaster Relief Preparedness to Coastal Hazards: A Preliminary Investigation of Factors Affecting Supply Chain Resilience in Hawai'i in October 2020. Led by Associate Professor Suwan Shen and Graduate Research Assistant Megan Julian, the researchers sought to identify key stakeholders, their primary concerns, challenges, the current level of disaster preparedness, and the priority with projected sea level rise.

The METRANS Transportation Consortium was established in 1998 as the first University Transportation Center in Southern California. METRANS is a joint partnership of the University of Southern California (USC) and California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).

METRANS' mission is to solve metropolitan transportation problems of large through interdisciplinary research, education and outreach. Its three primary objectives are: (1) fostering independent, high quality research to solve the nation's transportation problems; (2) training the next generation transportation workforce; and (3) disseminating information, best practices, and technology to the professional community.
