A few months ago, I had a checkup with my new primary care provider. Since it was our first visit, she asked me a series of routine questions about my health habits. When she asked about exercise, I told her I ran about four miles two or three times a week.


“How long does that take you?” she asked.


“About 30 minutes,” I replied.


“Well,” she said, “for heart health, you should be exercising at least 45 minutes.”


I looked at her and raised my eyebrows. She went on to her next question. I chuckled to myself.

Child Tax Credit Challenges



The Center for the Study of Social Policy (CSSP) created the New Neighborhood Podcast to broadcast discussions with people who are building a sense of community and supporting children and families. Their September 27 episode ("How Can We Reduce Child Poverty?") converses with Elisa Minoff, Senior Policy Analyst at CSSP, and Huong Vu, Parent Leader Network member and Automatic Benefit for Children Coalition Parent Advisory Board member, about their policy and advocacy work toward a permanent national child allowance. The need for a permanent Child Tax Credit expansion is clearer than ever following the new Census Bureau data that shows the child poverty rate more than doubled.

12-Week Paid Parental Leave for State Employees


Paid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child is a critical prevention strategy. This past September, Governor Katie Hobbs announced that 34,000 state employees can now access up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave when a new child joins their family.
