New Jersey is home to off year state level elections, but there were several federal races of interest on the ballot across the state.
New Jersey Senate
With former Senator Bob Menendez stepping down after his bribery conviction, Congressman Andy Kim (D) and Curtis Bashaw (R), a Cape May County businessman, faced off in a bid for the Senate seat. Kim handily won the Senate seat, defeating Bashaw.
New Jersey Congressional Districts
7th Congressional District
There was only one competitive congressional race in New Jersey this election cycle and that was in the 7th Congressional District. Incumbent freshman Congressman Tom Kean was challenged by progressive activist Sue Atlman. Congressman Kean was successful in retaining his seat and defeating Altman.
Despite not having many contested races, the New Jersey Congressional delegation will have many new faces in the 199th Congress due to the passing of Congressmen Payne and Pascrell and the ascension of Congressman Kim.
3rd Congressional District
Since Andy Kim vacated his congressional seat to run for Senate, Assemblyman Herb Conaway (D) and Rajesh Mohan (R),a cardiologist, faced off in the General Election for the open seat. Assemblyman Conaway ultimately won.
Since Assemblyman Conaway will be leaving the State Assembly, there will be a new chair of the Assembly Health Committee for the first time in two decades since Conaway assumed the role.
9th Congressional District
After late Congressman Bill Pascrell’s passing in August, State Senator Nellie Pou quickly consolidated county party support to run for his open seat. Senator Pou ran against Billy Prempeh (R), a U.S. Air Force veteran and 3 time congressional candidate. Senator Pou won the General Election.
With the Senator vacating the state legislature, her seat as Chairwoman of the highly influential Senate Commerce Committee will be up for grabs.
10th Congressional District
Late Congressman Payne also passed away earlier this year, leaving his seat vacant. LaMonica McIver, former Newark Councilwoman, won the special election for this seat and was sworn into Congress in September. She ran for a full term against small business owner Carmen Bucco (R) and easily beat him, receiving roughly 3x as many votes as Bucco.
Noteworthy County Election
It is also worth noting that Assemblywoman Pam Lampitt, longtime Chairwoman of the Assembly Education Committee, ran for Camden County Clerk and won. She will be vacating her seat in January leaving an Assembly seat open as well as the Education Chairship.
Congressional Incumbents
The below list of incumbents won their re-elections
Donald Norcross (D)- 1st Congressional District
Jeff Van Drew (R)- 2nd Congressional District
Chris Smith (R)- 4th Congressional District
Josh Gottheimer (D)- 5th Congressional District
Frank Pallone (D)- 6th Congressional District
Rob Menendez (D)- 8th Congressional District
Mikie Sherrill (D)- 11th Congressional District
Bonnie Watson Coleman (D)- 12th Congressional District
Looking Ahead to 2025
With the 2024 elections behind us, New Jersey is already gearing up for the 2025 elections where the Governorship and all 80 members of the State Assembly will be on the ballot. With Governor Murphy being term limited; we can expect the already crowded primary fields to become more contentious as the focus shifts from Washington, D.C. to Trenton.
