"ONCE A MARINE, ALWAYS A MARINE"
As a 19-year-old high school graduate, Sharon McQuaig had set an ambitious goal for herself: to join the United States Marines! Encouraged by her beloved mother, she began dieting and exercising to meet Marine Corps recruit standards. In 1969, her career as a Marine began and she was sent to Parris Island.
Fast forward to the present, at a recent TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meeting, Ms. McQuaig spoke to her fellow members about her mother’s role in helping her become a Marine.
To honor Ms. McQuaig and her military service, on November 10 (the Marine Corp’s 246th anniversary, and one day before Veterans Day 2021), she was presented with two Marine Corps flags by a former Marine and retired SJCSO deputy, James Baer.
TOPS member Sarah Weaver and Solid Waste Division representatives Bob Howell and Christopher Benjamin assisted with the ceremony. The American Flag Rescue Program provided the flags.
For information about the American Flag Rescue Program, please contact Chris Benjamin at (904) 827-6980 or cbenjamin@sjcfl.us. All damaged American flags are officially decommissioned by VFW Bryan Tutten Memorial Post 2391.
