THE BEDFORD BANNER
                                            November 2018

It's the Month for Gratitude

Gratitude makes us happierA five-minute a day gratitude journal can increase your long-term well-being by more than 10 percent That's the same impact as doubling your income!

Gratitude makes people like usGratitude generates social capital - in two studies with 243 total participants, those who were 10% more grateful than average had 17.5% more social capital.

Gratitude boosts our career - Gratitude makes you a more effective manager, helps you network, increases your decision making capabilities, increases your productivity, and helps you get mentors and proteges. As a result, gratitude helps you achieve your career goals, as well as making your workplace a more friendly and enjoyable place to be.

Gratitude makes us more optimistic- Gratitude is strongly correlated with optimism. Optimism in turn makes us happier, improves our health, and has been shown to increase lifespan by as much as a few years

Gratitude increases your productivity - Those who are insecure have difficulty focusing because many of their mental resources are tied up with their worries. On the other hand, those who are highly confident are able to be more productive, because they can direct more of their focus towards their work. This operates at both a conscious and subconscious level - we may be getting mentally distracted by our worries, or more commonly, parts of our subconscious mind are expending energy to suppress negative information and concerns. As gratitude has been shown to increase self-esteem and reduce insecurity, this means that it can help us focus and improve our productivity.

Thank you to everyone that took the survey. We have gathered some excellent data and will be utilizing it as we plan for the new year.  Shawn Henigan was the winner of the dinner at Red Heat Tavern.

AFC URGENT CARE WINS BEST TRUNK

The Goddard School Trunk or Treat celebrated its' tenth year with a record breaking 40 businesses participating and over 500 plus children collecting goodies. The Chamber along with those attending made a donation to The Friends For Matty Foundation, a nonprofit started by Phil & Tina Langone in memory of their son. The foundation provides financial assistance to families with children who are battling cancer.  In addition, some of our proceeds will be donated to hospitals to enhance family resources and support research for neuroblastoma and other childhood cancers.
AFC Urgent Care went all out as Sesame Street Characters and took home first prize in
the Best Trunk Category. Many thanks to our sponsor The Goddard School for making this happen every year!

5 Reasons You Should Buy a Ticket

 to Flavors of Bedford!
#5: You've Never Gone Before
Every year, the Chamber of Commerce counts about 200 people attending the event. Out of a town of over 12,000 residents, there's a good chance that you've never been! Plus, from my conversations with friends and passersby at Bedford Day, I can that a good portion of the town has not checked us out.
#4: Support Hanscom Heroes
Proceeds from the event support Hanscom AFB's efforts to welcome back deployed personnel and their families. And the base commander and his staff are always our honored guests, which gives you the opportunity to thank them directly for their service to our community and our country.
#3: Decide our Best Of Awards
This year we've reintroduced Best of Bedford awards, but with some new categories: Best Overall Dish; Best Dessert; and Most Flavorful - the most creative, new, unique or best-plated dish of the night. When you arrive, you'll be given tickets to cast your votes, and we'll announce the awards at 5:55 pm.
#2: It's Family-Friendly
You can get a family pack of four tickets for $100. That's $15 off the regular ticket price and not a bad price to feed a family of four - especially when you consider the variety and quality of the restaurants participating!
#1: It's Delicious!
Over 20 restaurants participate, and the menu ranges from Bedford Cupcakes sweet desserts to Ken's famous chicken fingers to Holi's savory favorites. If there's a restaurant you've been wanting to try, come taste them here! And we've attracted some of the best restaurants from neighboring towns, too, including Lexx from Lexington and Burton's from Burlington.
The event is co-sponsored by New England Nurseries, the Doubletree Bedford Glen and Brown & Brown Attorneys, PC. Dozens of local businesses have donated to make this a great event, so be sure to support the sponsors!
Tickets: $40 regular; $35 for seniors 65+; $100 for a family pack.
Purchase at: Great Road Gallery (363 Great Rd)
New England Nurseries (216 Concord Rd) or Cambridge Savings Bank (181 Great Rd)

DID YOU KNOW ?

36 years in Business !

Bedford Florist and Gifts has been in business, at the same location in the Great Rd Shopping  Plaza, since its doors opened September 1, 1982. For 36 years, owner/operator Nancy Tripodi  has  worked hard to establish a comfortable, friendly, yet professional family type atmosphere in her  business. Customers wants and needs are the highest priority, using only the freshest highest  quality products, whether it be fresh cut or silk flowers. That high quality also extends to the  quaint gift shop, making it hard for any customer to walk out without purchasing something, for  themselves or someone else.

Having started from scratch, relying on an infallible commitment to quality and word of mouth from numerous customers throughout the years, Bedford Florist's impeccable reputation is well known throughout homes and businesses not only here in Bedford, but in all of the surrounding towns as well. This reputation has earned Bedford Florist many awards, including Regional Favorite Florist, Honorable Mention Gift Shop, and the Reader's Choice Number One Favorite
Florist here in Bedford for the last 18 consecutive years.

In addition to the retail shop, Bedford Florist can be seen throughout the community, at all times of year, in the form of donations and charitable contributions supporting organizations such as The Pan Mass Challenge, Habitat For Humanity, Flavors of Bedford and the Bedford Citizen of the Year, to name a few. They are also known as being a proud supporter of the Bedford School System contributing yearly to such events as the BHS All Night Senior Party, Flavors of Bedford,  the 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony, the PTA and the BAA.
Bedford Florist has been devoted to the town of Bedford and its citizens for almost four decades. Nancy was selected Business person of the Year in 2009 by the Chamber in recognition of her giving.
But what truly sums up Nancy is her kindness and how she always seems to know just what to do. I recently went into to Bedford Florist to get some flowers for a widow who was going through a hard time. After Nancy made this beautiful bouquet- she handed me back my credit card and smiled, this one is on me.. I hope she has a better day.
I can say for sure a lot of people have better days because of Nancy- Congratulations on your 36 years and thank you for all you do for our town and residents.
