It is always good to get outside no matter the season. For many, winter is the season when a little more effort might be needed even though it is a magical time to go out into the woods to explore. Try this fun activity to get you and your kids outdoors!
Blindfold one child and lead them through a forested area to a tree perhaps 10 m (30 ft.) away. Ask the blindfolded player to explore the tree with their hands and arms. This will help them to get an idea of the diameter, the texture of the bark, whether it has low branches, lichens, holes or even large roots. Then lead the blindfolded child back to the starting point – take a circuitous route (and watch for footprints in snow). Remove their blindfold and ask your child to find their tree.
If you have more than one child, make it a game by timing them when they search for their tree. This is a great way to get your kids acquainted with trees using senses other than sight, and they will have fun to boot!
