November 2025

Words from your Houston SCBWI Co-Regional Advisor

As creatives, we spend so much time chasing the next sentence, the next sketch, the next idea, that it’s easy to forget to pause and be grateful for the work already on the page. Thanksgiving feels like the right moment to do just that.

As much as it stresses me, I’m thankful for the blank page that welcomes us back, story after story, sketch after sketch. It's another chance to create a whole new world.

I’m thankful for revision—the place where cutting one sentence can let the next one shine, or where shifting a single line changes the whole feeling of an illustration.

Most of all, I’m thankful for the creative tools themselves—words and lines. A verb can tilt a scene toward urgency or hope, just as a curve can soothe or a zig-zag can energize. And together, story and art can open a door in a child’s heart and whisper, you belong here. That is no small gift.

So this season, let’s celebrate what we’ve created, what we’re still shaping, and the path we share.

Houston Liftoff!

With the power of community, we are creating stories and illustrations in just 30 minutes! Join us on November 11th for the next community session. Remember, after the 30 minutes, we open the mics to share.

And maybe one of these stories or illustrations will be added to a Houston Lift-Off anthology.

November 20th, 6:00 - 9:00 pm

How does Illustrator Sketch Night work on ZOOM? We enjoy a quick visit and share for the first 10-15 minutes and then it is independent work time. I provide an optional drawing prompt in addition to the SCBWI #DrawThis option if you didn't come with a project of your own. When the timer stops, we share our progress! Just think, all the advantages of a group of creatives doing what creatives do, but without the drive in Houston traffic!

Sunday afternoon FIGURE DRAWING session, who wants to go?

FOLK WISDOM & OTHER THOUGHTS

By Jim Smolski

"It is the imperfections in a child's artwork that makes it perfect!"

Sharing

Rabbit and Squirrel were scrambling.

It is Fall, a time to do things.

Get Winter preparations started.

Defeat what cold weather brings.

Around and then, around again.

Searching for food to store.

Build a shelter, dig a hole.

That they didn’t need before.

A rabbit hole to hibernate.

With Winter drawing near.

A nest made of branches and leaves.

Before they disappear.

Squirrels are the best at gathering acorns.

But can’t remember where they’re hidden.

Then Squirrel had a great idea.

Do something that’s forbidden.

That squirrel thought “I will show Rabbit!”

My secret hiding places.

Rabbit will tell me what,

My remembering, time erases.

We can share food and warm places.

When we need them until Spring.

Agreement made, start the parade!

Sharing, that’s the thing!
