Honoring the Service of our Veterans

This month we honor the men and women who have served our country with military service. On November 11 the nation celebrates Veterans Day and recognizes the contribution of our servicemen and women, both in wartime and in peace. Here at the Senior Center we celebrate our Veterans with a program on November 9 and look forward to acknowledging our member veterans, as well as our friends from Brandywine Senior Living. Every year the Veterans Day National Committee selects a theme for Veterans Day and this year the theme is “service”. The Oxford Dictionary defines “service” as “the action of helping or doing work for someone”, which can seem like such a simple definition when we think of the sacrifices our military has made for our country. Each month I have the pleasure of hosting the Veterans Group at the center and when I think of their service, I am also struck by the legacy of service they have in their families.

         Lt. Colonel Rhoderick Holliday served in the US Air Force and later served as a ROTC instructor and Public Information Officer. Rhoderick was inspired by his father (Corporal Rhoderick H. Holliday) who fought as a WWII tank gunner under General Patton. He also was heavily influenced by the dedicated service of his Uncles

Col. Lindley Mordecai, Col. Ronald Mordecai, Lt. Col. Conrad Duncan and Captain Hugh Mordecai who served in WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Rhoderick’s brother Col. Terrance Holliday also continued this family tradition of service and was in the US Air Force.

    Buddy Thomas served in the US Marine Corp. earning a Purple Heart for his efforts in Vietnam. Buddy comes from a long line of military service. Both of his parents served as Marines, his mother paying the ultimate sacrifice for service, was killed while in Okinawa. Buddy’s sisters and five cousins also served in the Marie Corp. Both of Buddy’s sons also followed in his footsteps as well. His son Joseph served twenty

years in the Marines before working for the NCIS. His son Michael also was in the

Marine Corp.

Robert Garr served in the US Army in the Korean Army following the service legacy of his father who was a lifelong Merchant Seaman Captain. Roberts brother Zack Garr served four years in the US NAVY and his brother Ed Garr spent 25 years in the US Marines.

    These are just a few examples of the dedicated service our senior center members and their families have provided. Please join us on November 9 at 10:30 am to honor our Veterans.

Sign up with Mary or Jody in the kitchen. If you are a Veteran and have not attended Veterans group, please feel free to reach out to me and I can give you more information and so that we can acknowledge your service at this celebration.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled (PAAD)

& Senior Gold Prescription Discount Program

The Department of Human Services in NJ offer’s “2” prescription assistance programs for people with Medicare Part D. The income eligibility to qualify for these programs has increased by $10,000 for 2024. Please review the follow information and if you think you may qualify, please see me for more information and how to apply.

Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled (PAAD)

This program, helps eligible New Jersey residents pay for prescription drugs, insulin, and syringes needed for injectable medicines. The PAAD co-payment is $5 for each PAAD covered generic prescription drug, and $7 for each PAAD covered brand name prescription drug. PAAD beneficiaries may pay less for generic drugs if their Medicare prescription drug plan charges them less than the $5 PAAD co-payment for generics.

You may qualify for PAAD if you meet the following requirements:

  • A New Jersey resident;
  • 65 years of age or older, or 18 years of age or older and receiving Social Security Title II Disability benefits; and
  • Annual income for 2024 of less than $52,142 if single, or less than $59,209 if married

Senior Gold Prescription Discount Program

This is another State-funded prescription program with a different co-payment structure and income eligibility guidelines than those of PAAD. The income eligibility requirements are higher limits than PAAD.  To qualify for Senior Gold, you must meet the following requirements

A New Jersey resident;

  •  65 years of age or older; or 18 years of age or older and receiving Social Security Title II Disability benefits;
  • Annual income for 2024 is less than $62,142 if single, and less than $69,209 if married.

With the Senior Gold program, a person must pay full premium for a Part D Plan or Advantage Plan.

For each prescription the person pays Senior Gold copay of $15, plus 50% of remaining cost of Part D cost share.
