Annual Christmas Open House
Seasonal Ideas & Information for November

The following are a list of activities to consider for your November gardening:
  • Vegetables and Herbs - Gardeners are continuing to plant arugula, bok choy, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, chard, collards, lettuce, mustard greens, kale and more!  When planting transplants, water them in with a soluble fertilizer solution to get them off to a good start.  Continue a light application of fertilizer every few weeks.  Watch for pests, such as aphids and caterpillars.  Sprays of insecticidal soap will control aphids and sprays or dust containing Bt will control caterpillars.

  • Plant Hyacinth, Tulips, Paperwhites, and Amaryllis

  • Perennials and Annuals -  It's time to plant alyssum, cyclamen, mums, pansies, snapdragons, violas and ornamental cabbages.  If you haven't done so already, work some compost into the soil before planting.
  • Trees, Shrubs & Vines -
This is the best time of the year to plant woody ornamentals!  This is also the best time to move a plant already growing in the landscape.  Stop in and let us help you select a beautiful shrub or tree for your Fall landscape!  Our landscape department will be happy to plant for you.  Give us a call to schedule!

Timely Tip from Texas Gardener Magazine

"This is leaf season!  Those fallen leaves contain 75 percent of the nutrients that the tree took up during the year. Now they are laying on the ground, and you have to decide whether you want to recycle that free, organic fertilizer back into the soil by composting and/or mulching or pay someone to haul the nutrients and mulch away.  Serious gardeners never let a leaf leave their property and, in most cases, not their neighbor's either! Isn't it nice of folks to bag their leaves and put them out front for us to come by and pick up?  Stockpile the leaves for composting and mulching throughout the year until next leaf season arrives."

I t is most effective to  apply Milky Spore in the summer and early fall. The soil must be above 65 degrees F when the grubs are actively feeding, which is the best time for application. It works best to apply  just before rainfall, or water in lightly after application to soak into soil.
