Jim Nelson - Board of Directors, President

As we all begin to enjoy cooler weather, we realize that the holidays are quickly approaching and our Snowbirds are returning to our valley. I would like to welcome all of you back to our club and look forward to greeting you.

This last year we have had some significant changes to our club, all which will contribute to our future growth and success.

  • Three managers left in a 2-month span, and the positions have since been filled. The General Manager position was the most difficult to fill and we found Eric Charos. He came to us after 12 years at Sunrise CC in Rancho Mirage, CA and we are very fortunate to have him.
  • Luz Gonzalez has filled the Food and Beverage Manager position and Richard Pimentel is our new Maintenance Manager.
  • We have replaced pumps for our irrigation system, an approximately $500,000 project with the hill booster pump and roofs over the pump houses. We should be good for another 20 years!
  • Our new ADA bathroom is nearing completion. It is a very nice addition to our already beautiful pool area. The building houses both a male and female bathroom, plus showers in each. We are presently working on the parking lot and landscape to complete the project.
  • As most of you know, our Finance Committee has been working on our 2022-23 budget and should have their draft off to the Board in the next few days. A tremendous amount of work has gone into this budget. Please thank these committee members for their hard work as they make it possible for us to operate our club properly.

Another committee that has been working hard to cut costs is the Green Committee. They are looking at common sense ways to save money. MLCC has approval to receive cash rebates to install new Xeriscape to our golf course. This will save water and chemicals in the future with a minimal cost for maintenance. There is no financial impact in doing these projects which makes them more attractive.

Lastly, we are having our 50th anniversary for the club November 4/5. Due to Covid over the last 2 years it is happening this year. This is quite a milestone for MLCC and we hope every member attends our festivities. WE welcome all new members and those who normally do not attend our events. A live rock band will play the evening of 11/5. The band, World Tour-Legends of Rock, is made up of professional musicians who traveled with many bands from the 80s including Guns and Roses, Kansas, Styx, Slash plus many others, and tour all over the world.

Please come and enjoy. The Members Relations office can take your reservations for the weekend festivities.

See you at the party,

Jim Nelson BOD President

Eric Charos - General Manager

The weather is starting to finally feel like Fall around Mission Lakes CC and it really feels great as we get ready for the beginning of a new season.

Rafael and his staff have been working hard to get the golf course ready to play on the 5th of November and he really thinks that this year has been one of the better seasons to grow grass. He did have some challenges though, with a Haboob hitting Mission Lakes just after the first few days of seed going down. And just a few weeks ago we had heavy rains one afternoon, and that slowed the process down as we had to clean up for a few days. All in all, Rafael and his team feel good about this year’s over-seeding program and hope all our Members enjoy their golfing season. Please take care of your course. It’s new grass so please always use the 90-degree rule entering the fairways and keep from parking too close to the greens. Rafael and his staff will appreciate your help.

David and his staff are working hard merchandising the new items in the pro shop and those items will be unveiled on Nov. 4th , the start of the 50th Anniversary weekend.

The annual Wine and Cheese event will start at 3pm in front of the golf shop. We hope to see you all there. The San Jacinto Dining Room is excited to start a new season with our Halloween Party/Costume Contest Friday October 28th. Chef Romo has been busy putting together some new menus to start off the new season and plans on changing things up throughout the year.

Special Thanks to all the volunteers that helped with our first Trunk or Treat. It was a big success. I know we all had fun and hope to add the event to the calendar next season. At the end of the day It’s all about our Community and Member participation that makes Mission Lakes CC a great place to live.

We all hope you will enjoy the 50th Anniversary event and all the festivities taking place November 4th & 5th.

From all the staff, we look forward to a wonderful new year and serving our great Community.

BOD Meeting Highlights

GM Summary:

  • The Club’s September fiscal report highlighted a current YTD net profit of $168K despite the $214K seed expenses we incurred this month.
  •  F & B will be having new menus to kick off the season and is expecting to have new choices quarterly
  • ADA restrooms are coming along. All interior work is complete, and stucco is being textured on the outer walls this week. Next, we will be exploring parking solutions.
  • Working on reducing the use of Styrofoam cups on the golf course and encouraging personal cups. Ice and water machines will continue to be available.
  • We have received positive feedback on our Yoga classes and requests to keep them.
  • Met with the Condo Management Representative and Condo Board President, who have advised that they are furnishing the empty office on their premises with furniture, a microwave, and a coffee maker and working toward creating a law enforcement substation or way station. The added presence of law enforcement at MLCC is expected to deter the occasional unwelcome trespassers.

The Board approved the following:

  • Replacement of ice machine in the cart barn for $5,319
  • Emergency primary drain repair in the bar for $8200. This amount included a full camera inspection of all our plumbing to mitigate future repair expenses.
  • Replacement of the back flow device to stainless steel as required by the health department for the water fountains in the bar
  • The extension of the Walking Program for golfers who want to use a “Walking Golf Push Cart” as presented by Hall Daily. The Golf Pro Shop will manage the program.
  • Approved extending the invitation to the OLLI program for using our facilities.
  • We have received applications for members interested in participating in the New Strategic Planning Committee and are still open to more participation.

A Little Bit of History - Memorial Tournament

As you reflect back on the history and growth of Mission Lakes, one cannot deny that it has been the membership involvement that has influenced and molded our community. Many of the traditional events we enjoy today were born from mere ideas from members embracing similar community values and getting together to celebrate a moment, then repeating it every year, turning it to a tradition. One of these traditional events is the Memorial Tournament held this year on November 12th. As you read this beautifully written story you can appreciate why this tournament came to be. Hope to see you there and enjoy becoming part of our tradition! Thank you to Shelley Daily for giving us the history behind the Memorial Tournament and honoring the memory of our departed Club Members.

Abraham Lincoln, who was a jack of all trades before finding his way into history, once said: “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” In 2011, Mission Lakes celebrated a man whose life accounted for so much more than just his years here. And the Club did it in a traditionally inclusive way.

Paul Martin was a summertime transplant from Alaska who had a place in Desert Hot Springs. In his first summer he approached MLCC golf professional Robert Duncan asking if there was anything he could do. Who was he?

Paul (or Paulie) had lived in Alaska. His job was working on the pipeline as a heavy equipment operator. But that really wasn’t enough for him. He managed a hotel and restaurant for the workers on the pipeline-all at the same time he was operating heavy equipment. He was an accomplished pilot, flying people and government officials from island to island. Paul also owned a fishing boat and would take visitors and guests out for fishing halibut.

When he finally retired full time in the desert, he was – he said with irrepressible candor – “bored.” Approaching Robert here at the Club, he asked if there was anything he could do to keep himself busy. Robert gave him a job picking up golf balls on the old range. The following year Robert asked if he could run the cart barn full time. The rest is history.

Paul rebuilt golf carts for many of our residents. He was the guy you went to when you needed new batteries, new wiring, new brakes. He truly enjoyed helping the Members.

But that wasn’t all he did. He’d help some of our widows move refrigerators, furniture, and other heavy items at no charge. However, he never turned down a tip of a good cigar or three – the more aromatic, the better.

Paul had a habit of finding feral cats, catching them, and taking them to the vet to get shots and spayed or neutered. Some of us also remember a big black and very skittish dog running around the golf course. The dog wasn’t particularly friendly and refused any kind of contact with Members. Until one day, Paul somehow made friends with the dog. Before long we would see Paul and “Shadow” in a golf cart marshalling the course. Shadow’s job was to chase coyotes and thereafter became an unofficial employee of the Club.

During the summer of 2011 alongside the 18th fairway, Paul was doing his normal rounds when he lost consciousness in the cart and later died at the hospital. At the next Board meeting, a few men asked to have a tournament in Paul’s name. After thoughtful consideration, the BOD elected to have an annual tournament each November to honor the lives of all Members and staff who had died during the past season. Thus the Memorial Tournament was born 11 years ago in loving memory of Paul and all of our other friends, neighbors and employees whose years had come to an end.

This year the tournament will be held on November 12. This tournament is open to all MLCC Members who have an established handicap. The cost is $45 which includes lunch. Please sign up on Chelsea no later than November 10. It’s a fitting annual tribute to Paul’s one-for-all-and-all-for-one legacy.

Arts and Crafts Fair

MLCC's annual Arts & Crafts Fair features local artists from throughout Mission Lakes Country Club and surrounding areas presenting their original work in all mediums of fine art and fine crafts. The artwork presented will include clay, glass, digital, jewelry, mixed media, paintings in acrylic, oil, and watercolor, photography, sculpture in bronze, clay, glass, metal, and wood. All work is available for purchase. Event will take place on Sunday, November 13, 2022, from 10 AM to 3 PM.

Member Communications Committee

The Member Communications Committee has worked hard throughout the summer to develop ways to keep our community connected and engaged. With the exception of one veteran member, our members are all relatively new to Mission Lakes, which offers great opportunities for new ideas and allows us to explore old ideas with a refreshed look.

Last month we were excited to launch our new version of the e-News and pleased with the feedback received. It does take some work to produce this publication, but thanks to Erin Jones in our Member Relations Office, we have the resources to create and distribute to your email box monthly. We are fortunate too to have added a new member this month with a background in Communications who will be working to continue to refine its content and presentation. It is our hope that you find this to be an excellent source for staying in the know. We welcome ALL feedback and ask you to provide your comments to the committee directly at: [email protected]

In closing, the last four months of the summer season have cycled through some memberships. While we bid farewell to those members who left MLCC with their memories, we are excited to welcome 53 new members to the MLCC family. You will find those who recently received their membership packages highlighted in the NEW MEMBERS section of the newsletter.

From home to home and heart to heart, warmest wishes this Thanksgiving holiday.

Architectural Control Committee

The ACC TEAM is very thankful to all our members who complied with the annual palm tree trimming effort in June. Thanks to all for your cooperation. You will notice the palm fronds and skins have not been as widely scattered all over our streets and our neighbors’ yards on our windy days making for a safer community.

While we are thankful to the 95% of our members who have been diligent about keeping their yards and vacant lots well-maintained year-round, we want to heighten awareness that with the increased rains this year, there is an increase in weeds spreading on our landscape, some with the black plastic weed cover exposed. Please be mindful that many of our members are full-time residents at MLCC who enjoy seeing all our yards maintained year-round, not just when our seasonal and weekend members return.

Lastly, we also want to remind you that trash bins should not be placed curbside until the day prior to trash day and need to be removed from the curb by the end of trash pickup day and stored away from street or golf course view in accordance with CC&Rs section 6.6.5 (r).

Thank you all, and have a fabulous Thanksgiving holiday.

Green Committee

1. Noise Abatement Main Pump: The main pump station is being enclosed on 3 sides, existing measures will be adjusted to improve noise reduction. Sound proofing material has been added to the roof and will be installed on the side walls as we continue to find a solution. Once we get the noise issue resolved we will work the Aesthetics of the Pump Station, Paint and possibly planting Ficus around the entire pump station. The Ficus will help with dissipating residual noise.

2. Turf Removal-Xeriscape Test Area:  The Desert Water Agency (DWA) has approved our Turf Removal Project. We were informed on October 14, 2022, that DWA will split the $3.00 Rebate with Mission Springs Water District with each District paying $1.50 sq/ft (Total Rebate of $3.00 sq/ft). DWA measured our project and determined it to be 53,877 sq/ft. Mission Lakes Country Club will need to complete and submit an application to Mission Springs Water District for their portion of the Rebate ($1.50 sq/ft) The application should be in to MSWD by the day of this meeting, and we expect to hear back from them by the end of next week. A Joint Green Committee and Board of Directors meeting was held on Monday October 24, 2022, to discuss this project. That meeting was recorded and is available on the MLCC Facebook page.

3. Course Overseed: Maintenance started overseeding the course on Thursday Oct 6, 2022, and finished on Saturday Oct 8. What you see today is 2 weeks growth. Rafael has said that the course will be ready for play on November 5, 2022. There may be some Cart restrictions to protect the young grass. That will be determined by the Superintendent if necessary.

4. Bermuda Grass Test Area: The 2 varieties of Bermuda Grass being tested behind the Black Tee Box on Hole 16 are thriving and doing well despite the weeds. We are also trying to contact the Turf Grass program at UC Riverside to investigate the cold tolerant Bermuda varieties they are developing. The “Yukon” variety is planted on the Boyers Lake side, the “Hollywood” variety is planted closest to the houses. Please check it out.

House Committee

The following main points were discussed at the last House Committee Meeting:

50th Anniversary History - History component on the evolution of our Club and community is coming along very well. The San Gorgonio Room will be set up as a museum to display pictures of past BOD Presidents, along with posters, memorabilia, and other photos that have been submitted by members of the club.

Activities & Entertainment

  • Have received member feedback requesting a comeback to Karaoke and Line Dancing as fun activities to have for entertainment.
  • The Committee was visited by Angela Allen, representative from OLLI – Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Cal State San Bernardino. Angela presented a short video about the institute and the courses available to 50+ year olds. A variety of classes are offered on campus as well as cultural and entertainment outings where travel is provided. No books, no grades, no pressure! You can find more information about OLLI on their website https://www.csusb.edu/olli

In promoting a resident program here at MLCC, Angela is offering to provide an introductory “FREE OF CHARGE” session on The History of the Coachella Valley and Desert Hot Springs. The classes would be at the clubhouse. The House Committee is endorsing and asking the Board to consider having this event sometime in the late Winter of 2023

Citizens on Patrol

Reported by Larry Carivau, Chair of our C.O.P.S Program

Our C.O.P.S program continues to experience some challenges with the maintenance of our vehicle. We have recently experienced damage to the wiring caused by our local rodent population. We no sooner made repairs, only to find our furry friends deciding to find shelter again and building nests. We are spraying recommended rodent repellent in hopes to further mitigate an inviting environment.

We have two new approved members, Jack and Karen Peterson who will fill the void of two recent members on medical leave.

Four years ago, the various C.O.P.S. chapters in the Coachella Valley formed a coalition committee in an effort to provide presentations from our law enforcement partners and unify its corps. Meetings that were suspended during the last two years due to COVID are now being re-established. Anyone with an interest in attending this year’s symposium which will be held on November 15th between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., please contact Larry at   [email protected] to sign up.

Our next C.O.P.S meeting will be held, Tuesday, November 8th at 1:30 p.m. in the San Gorgonio room. We invite everyone to attend.

Financial & Credit Committee

The month of September ended better than expected as F&B, Golf Shop, The Inn, and Golf Course Maintenance all outperformed the budget. This leaves our year-to-date in good shape so far. Click HERE to view a brief financial summary.

As a reminder, the Finance Committee meets the third Wednesday of every month and reviews the monthly financial report in detail - the committee looks forward to seeing you there.

Women's Golf Association Report

At our recent WGA Board of Directors and Standing Committee Chair meeting, I asked the following question, “How would you describe the purpose and value of the WGA in just one word?” The very first word that many said was “Friendship”. The second word was “Camaraderie”! Relationships, community, and support were shared. Eventually, we came to “Golf” and “Competition”. This is exactly why I joined the WGA and why I am happy to serve on the WGA Board. Golf is the driving force that brings us together but first and foremost, it is the friendships and camaraderie of the membership that keeps us here.

On Friday, November 18th, the afternoon scramble will be an opportunity for new MLCC members to meet and play with MLCC, WGA, and MGA current members. It is a great way to be introduced to our community and course regardless of skill level. I will be there and look forward to seeing long-time friends/members along with hopefully, many new faces! Please feel free to find me if you have any questions about joining the WGA. As a reminder, Linda Crook is our WGA Membership Chair. She has sent the renewal email to our current members. If you would like to join, contact Linda directly at [email protected] or find the membership form in the pro shop.

For our current WGA members, please watch for the November General Meeting information through Constant Contact. We will meet at 1 pm following the MLCC Memorial Tournament on November 12th. We have several important agenda items and your participation is important to ensure that all voices are included in discussions.

MLCC Giving Back & Giving Thanks

Many of us have been fortunate to have the means to sustain our customary lifestyle regardless of the economy and life events. Unfortunately, there are those who are facing difficult times and could use a little help. During these times when we reflect and give thanks for what we have, we feel it is a good time to extend some of our gratitude through donations to deserving charities. This month, Mission Lakes Country Club has decided to support three charitable organizations and will be accepting food and other essential donations at the Clubhouse in support of their cause.  We hope you can find some time to share your generosity.

DHS Animal Shelter

The DHS Animal Shelter is in dire need of our support all throughout the year! The selfless work by the volunteers helps these deprived animals to have a better life. The MLCC community supports the best interests of The DHS Animal Shelter by helping to provide pet food and supplies.

Greg Stark's Donation

Many of us have enjoyed seeing Greg Stark’s pictures posted on Facebook highlighting many of the beautiful views our Mission Lakes paradise has to offer. This month Greg converted his shot of our Riviera style pool into canvas and donated it to the Club. Thank you, Greg, for your generosity in sharing your talent with our community. I know it does not do it justice here, you will just have to see it at the Clubhouse!

During the October shutdown the MLCC ground crew have been working diligently to spruce up our Club. Greg captured our two little golfers enjoying the day in the sun.

The National Charity

The National Charity League is another great charity that works closely with our youth in building values and encouraging sense of community and service by providing resources to families of critically ill and injured patients treated by the Desert Care Network. We have a member family who has been very involved with this charity for a number or years and is asking for your support by donating through November 17th.

"Feed The Need"- Holiday Food Drive

Mission Lakes Country Club has partnered with FOOD NOW for this year's food drive. FOOD NOW strives to improve the quality of life in Eastern Riverside County by providing food assistance, community outreach, and support services which strengthen families and build healthy communities. Food distribution takes place weekly on Wednesday and Thursday from 8 am to 10:30 am at their facility at 14080 Palm Drive, Suite E, DHS.

Mission Lakes Country Club is proud to participate in this year’s Toys for Tots toy drive, as we have done for many years!
