Ask the Family Educator

by Maxine Cohen, Parent Educator

I am not looking forward to the end of daylight saving time. What can I do to adjust better to the hour change?

With fall in full swing, evidenced by the lovely leaf color change, cooler weather, football games, and pumpkin spice everywhere, comes the end of daylight saving time on Sunday, November 5th. We “fall back” to standard time, setting our clocks back one hour. Why does this happen? It’s a myth that farmers needed the extra hour of light to work in the fields. It was Benjamin Franklin, in 1784, who first proposed the change in order to conserve candles. The U.S Congress formally implemented this practice in 1918 to save energy at the start of World War 1.

Research shows that we experience sleep loss due to this one-hour change, leading to negative health consequences. It seems ironic since we technically gain an extra hour of sleep. However, most people simply wake up one hour earlier. This sleep disruption generally lasts for a week or more, affecting our ability at work since we are sleep deprived. Additionally, research indicates an increase in emotional and behavioral disorders as well as in accidents and injuries. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has tried to get rid of daylight savings time for the past few years, but has been unsuccessful to date.

In order to feel better during this time change, adjust your clocks at bedtime on Saturday night and try to go to sleep at your usual time. Then, try to arise on Sunday at your normal time, thereby giving you that extra hour of sleep. Also, go outdoors Sunday morning for some exercise and morning light. This will boost your cortisol levels, giving you energy and stopping melatonin production which makes you sleepy. This will help to minimize any health challenges and get you off to a great start of the holiday season.

The event also collected donations of dog food or toys for local animal shelters.

Remembering

Rodney Anderson

Friends, family, members of the Long Island Farm Bureau, and local officials gathered at the Suffolk County Farm & Education Center to honor and celebrate the life of Rodney Anderson. Rodney was a beloved figure in the Riverhead community and a significant contributor to the agricultural heritage of our region.

Rodney will be remembered with a beautiful new bench on the farm grounds dedicated to his memory. An important educational hub in our county providing residents with a new understanding of agriculture, the Suffolk County Farm is a fitting place to reflect on Rodney’s legacy as not just a farmer, but as a true community builder.

How to Keep Horses Safe from West Nile Virus

As some horse enthusiasts may already know, an unvaccinated horse has tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) here in Suffolk County.

West Nile Virus is transmitted when a mosquito feeds from an infected host (typically a bird) and becomes infected. The mosquito then passes the virus along to the horse by biting them. There is no evidence that horses can pass the virus to other horses, humans or birds.

In horses, West Nile symptoms are numerous and include weakness and incoordination, muscle twitches or tremors, altered mental state, hypersensitivity, fever, seizures and more. One of the best ways to protect your horses from West Nile is to have them vaccinated. This should be done in the spring a few weeks before mosquitos are active. If you live in an area that is heavily populated by mosquitos, your horse may need more than one annual vaccination. Your vet can advise you on this.

Other prevention methods include using topical bug repellants, turning in horses at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most prevalent, and even use a decoy light 50 yards from where your horses sleep to attract mosquitos away. At the Suffolk County Farm, we employ many of these practices, as well as fly masks and fly leg wraps (pictured here) to help keep our horses comfortable.

Marine

Monkfish Marketing Initiative Featured in Northforker

The Marine Program's Monkfish Marketing Initiative was recently featured in an article by Northforker!

Read here

In collaboration with industry organizations, the Monkfish Marketing Initiative seeks to increase consumption of and demand for monkfish (aka goosefish) through product development and audience expansion. Inhabiting the waters of the Greater Atlantic region and caught by fishing fleets from Maine to North Carolina, Monkfish has firm, white, sweet-tasting meat akin to that of lobster. A historically weak foreign market and a lack of domestic demand has resulted in a boom in Monkfish population, making this delicious fish a more economical and sustainable choice than ever before!

Justin Bopp, Stony Brook Ph.D. Student & Marine Program Field Assistant, Published in Estuaries and Coasts Journal

Take a look at this paper authored by Justin Bopp, a Ph.D. student at Stony Brook University and field assistant with the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program!

Collaborating with colleagues from Stony Brook University, the program played a pivotal role in conducting this important research, including locating the late-stage juvenile horseshoe crabs which have very little known about them.

The study, published in the Coastal and Estuarine Research Federation CERF journal Estuaries and Coasts, examines the movement patterns of horseshoe crabs during their growth stages and in different geographical locations. The research team focused on two distinct populations, investigating factors such as resource utilization by young and adult crabs, distinctions between male and female crabs, and variations in diet across seasons and among different crab groups.

The research corroborates the idea that horseshoe crabs exhibit dietary versatility, offering fresh perspectives on the interplay between their mobility and feeding habits.

Access the complete paper here.
