Up Next: A Gift of the Magi

A musical inspired by the short story by O. Henry

By James DeVita and Josh Schmidt

Directed by Jacob Janssen

With full hearts and empty pockets, newlyweds Jim and Della seek the perfect gift for one another, only to find they already have all they need. In this heartwarming musical adaptation of a classic tale of love and generosity, and with O. Henry himself narrating the story in song, it’s hard to imagine a more idyllic holiday escape.

“TAP Talks”: A Three-Part Discussion Series with Theatre Pros at the Sturgeon Bay Library

Join us beginning next week for TAP Talks: a three-part series designed to bring audiences closer to the creative heart of theatre. These chats are offered in partnership with the Sturgeon Bay branch of the Door County Library. Running Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. on November 12, November 19, and December 10, these interactive sessions provide a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the collaborative process of bringing a production from concept to stage. Led by TAP’s Jackie and Steve Kane Artistic Director Jacob Janssen, each talk invites a special guest from the creative team behind A Gift of the Magi, TAP’s upcoming holiday musical, for an in-depth exploration of theatre-making.

Whether attending in person at the Sturgeon Bay Library or joining virtually via Zoom, participants will gain insights into each critical stage of creating a performance, from design to rehearsal to the final show.

Session 1: Design

Tuesday, November 12, 4-5 p.m.

Join Jacob Janssen and a TAP designer to explore the intricate design elements behind TAP’s productions. Topics will include props, costumes, set, and lighting design, offering a unique glimpse into how visual aesthetics support storytelling.

Session 2: Rehearsal

Tuesday, November 19, 4-5 p.m.

This session will dive into the rehearsal process, featuring a TAP production team member and the journey from script to stage, including character development, staging decisions, and how the team collaborates to build dynamic performances.

Session 3: Performance

Tuesday, December 10, 4-5 p.m.

The final installment will bring the perspective of a Gift of the Magi cast member, who will discuss the craft of character portrayal and the collaborative spirit required to bring this beloved holiday story to life.

Musical Museum November 13-14:

Early to Moderate Stages of Dementia

2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 13 at Third Avenue PlayWorks

2:00 PM on Thursday, November 14 at Peninsula School of Art

Midsummer’s Music and TAP will host Clara Takarabe, violist and clinical music researcher with the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, for a series of clinical music performances and talks throughout Door County. The Musical Museum is a dementia-informed life-enrichment program featuring musical performances by Takarabe and the Griffon String Quartet intertwined with commentary and discussion around sound, music and poetry. The program acknowledges intellectual and social needs of this stage of life.

“Third Avenue PlayWorks is thrilled to collaborate with Midsummer’s Music and the Griffon String Quartet to host Clara Takarabe for this incredible series of events,” said Jacob Janssen, the Jackie & Steve Kane Artistic Director of Third Avenue PlayWorks. “We have long intuited the healing power of music and art, but Clara’s research at Northwestern University is proving the scientific efficacy of music in the healing process. We honored to be one of the hosts for her work here in Door County.”

This event is free and open to the public.

Programs are funded in part by grants from the Little Eddie Big Cup, Greater Green Bay Community Foundation, Wisconsin Arts Board, Wisconsin Public Service, and Destination Door County.
