On November 14th, 2024, Self-Help Enterprises (SHE) marked a milestone in local water management with the unveiling of a newly constructed domestic well in the Kaweah Subbasin of Tulare County. This well, funded by the Greater Kaweah Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA), represents the first of many projects aimed at mitigating the impacts of groundwater overdraft on domestic well users.
In California’s San Joaquin Valley, groundwater overdraft has led to dewatered wells and water quality issues, particularly affecting rural communities. SHE has long been at the forefront of addressing these challenges, providing critical services to residents who face these impacts. Through a collaborative approach with local GSAs, SHE is now expanding its efforts to implement sustainable groundwater management practices.
“At Self-Help Enterprises, we are proud to play a role in this critical work,” said Tom Collishaw, President and CEO of Self-Help Enterprises. “This event is a testament to the strength of local partnerships and our shared commitment to ensuring that every community member—especially those facing the most immediate impacts—has access to clean and sustainable water.”
The new well symbolizes a significant shift from state-led to locally-driven groundwater management, empowering communities to take action to restore and protect their vital water resources. With funding and support from key stakeholders, including the State Water Resources Control Board, SHE continues to lead the way in helping vulnerable residents navigate the challenges of groundwater depletion.
As the region moves towards long-term sustainability, SHE’s collaborative efforts with GSAs and community partners remain central to ensuring equitable access to water for future generations.
