AAUW
Together, we can reach gender equality in education, economic security, and leadership.
Our mission:
Equity for all
|
|
Congresswoman Sherrill’s acceptance speech covered many topics, in a very short time, that were quite relevant to our mission as activists for women’s rights and supporters of women leaders.
Our state board has been working diligently to keep us connected across the state through monthly programming and the newsletter, but we really could use some additional help! If you can commit to doing one thing a month, we need help editing the newsletter, or reaching out to prospective and new members. If you can help on a less regular basis, perhaps you would be interested in working on the program committee, contacting our C/U members, or being part of a public policy committee to study state legislation. Help us help you to get more mileage out of work you’re already doing in your branch by bringing it to the state level!
Speaking of stepping up our game, the AAUW NJ Charitable Trust is looking for new opportunities to fund mission projects or programs that empower women or girls. If you have an idea for collaborating with another organization, or a way to expand your branch project to reach more people, talk to any member of the Charitable Trust board to see how they might be able to help with funding.
Feeling thankful for the support of strong women,
Karen Brown, President

The Gender Wage Gap Continues...
On September 14, 2021, the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Labor Statistics released data indicating that, in 2020, women were paid 83 cents for every dollar paid to a man. While the numbers show that the gender pay gap closed slightly, this data point is highly misleading.
What's the Gender Wage Gap in New Jersey?
A 2020 AAUW report on New Jersey breaks down the overall gender wage gap in the state by congressional district, ranked from best (#1) to worst (#12)..

Why Do You Donate to AAUW?
This month I interviewed an Atlantic County AAUW member of over twenty years who regularly donates to the Greatest Needs Fund. While living in Rhode Island and working as an Associate Athletic Director at Rhode Island Institute she became a staunch advocate for Title IX and Equal Rights Amendment legislation. She participated in marches in Washington, DC in the late 70’s and has continued to support Title IX legislation. She fully understands that Title IX is very powerful in its scope and affects areas of education including but not limited to, recruitment and admissions, financial assistance, harassment and assault, and programs for women specializing in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. It is no surprise that she became very active in Tech Trek, a STEM camp for girls, held at Stockton University and has worked hard to make this program a reality.
AAUW supports vigorous enforcement of Title IX and all other civil rights laws pertaining to education. It launched an era of enormous progress for girls and women, but more work is needed to achieve its full promise. If you have strong feelings about helping women achieve their optimum potential, maybe you would consider donating to the Greatest Needs Fund of AAUW. We appreciate every day and dollar that our members spend fighting on behalf of women. Giving to our Greatest Needs Fund helps us use your donation where it’s needed the most. It’s so easy to do! Just go to https://ww2.aauw.org/donate-gift-new/
A special thank you to those women who have shared their story and give so generously to AAUW Greatest Needs Fund.

Why Representation Matters
November 8, 2021
Join Kenisha Tucker, co-founder of Hidden Figures of Madison, NJ, to learn why representation matters. Kenisha will share stories from the organization's journey to discover the in-between stories of Black community members who have contributed to Madison, NJ, and our nation. Participants will learn how hearing stories like these can foster compassion, broaden one's perspective, and give a generation an unlimited vision of what they and others can do for their community.
This program is courtesy of the Madison branch. Register below and you will receive the Zoom link prior to the event.

The Summit College Club branch invites you to a virtual book chat:
Black Faces, White Spaces
by Carolyn Finney
Nov. 11th at 1:30pm
In the case of race and the environment, it’s not just who we imagine has something valuable to say. These assumptions, beliefs, and perceptions can be found in the very foundation of our environmental thinking, how we define the “environment” and how we think of ourselves in relationship with the environment. Who do we see, what do we see?" — from the Preface

Antiracism Study Group and
For a More Equal Society Group Merge
Recently the Northern Ocean Branch's Antiracism Study Group led by Jane Pearlman merged with the Atlantic County's group called For A More Equal Society, under the leadership of Carolyn Bassett. Carolyn led our first joint meeting in October where our main theme was CRT or Critical Race Theory.
We all enjoy these studies and learn a great deal. We meet once a month on Zoom but read and watch videos for each topic. We recommend that your branch or multiple branches give it a go.
Alice Tarlach, co-President, Northern Ocean County Branch
