A Message from the Mayor

As I promised on my first day on the job, I am 100% committed to fighting traffic gridlock, keeping you and your family safe, and delivering more homes particularly for first-time homebuyers.

We have reduced our development charges, make housing more affordable and accessible, especially for young families.

We are opening a new York Regional Police substation in Kleinburg to keep the west end of our city safe. This new substation is on track to open in early 2025.

The Canada-America Bridge is well under way, the Kirby Road extension is under construction and I can confirm that Bass Pro Mills Drive extension to Weston Road will begin construction before the tend of this term.

With the festive season upon us, I want to take this opportunity to invite everyone to our annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony which is taking place on Friday, December 6 at 7:00pm at Vaughan City Hall - Courtyard.

Please enjoy this month’s newsletter, filled with good news and updates on all the important work we are doing for Vaughan residents.

Thank you,

IN THE NEWS

Important Community Update!

The City of Vaughan has partnered with York Regional Police (YRP) to deliver a new police substation in Kleinburg that is scheduled to open officially in early 2025.

This new substation will help increase the police presence in Vaughan’s west-end and will make it easier for residents of Kleinburg and Woodbridge to remain safe.

Too many Vaughan residents have been victimized by crime in recent months, particularly vehicle theft and home break-ins.

Enough is enough.

Mayor Steven Del Duca and Members of Council have stepped up alongside YRP to send a clear message: we want the criminals off our streets and behind bars where they belong.

Together, we will deliver a stronger and more accessible police presence, and we will do whatever is required to keep our residents safe.

Development charges have become an unfair tax burden on homebuyers. Too many of our residents, in particular young families in our community, have seen their dream of buying a home close to where they grew up, disappear completely as housing prices have spiraled out of control. We have a housing affordability crisis and it’s time for us to get real about the solutions needed to solve it. Today’s decision by Vaughan Council to dramatically reduce our development charges for the foreseeable future is a strong step in the right direction. I urge other municipalities to follow our lead and do the right thing.

Eight community leaders were recognized for their efforts to make Vaughan a great place to live, work and visit.

I presided over the City of Vaughan’s 2024 Order of Vaughan investiture ceremony at Vaughan City Hall yesterday evening. The Order of Vaughan is the highest civic honour the City may bestow on individuals who exemplify extraordinary citizenship and better the community.

The 2024 Order of Vaughan was awarded to the following eight remarkable individuals for their pivotal role in shaping the community:

  • Barry Harte – Athletics category
  • Erlinda Insigne – Not-for-profit category
  • Gina Balseca-Aguirre – Not-for-profit category
  • Jade Crystal – Education category
  • Rabbi J Avram Rothman – Spirituality category
  • Maria Tatangelo – Not-for-profit category
  • Maureen Leshem – Not-for-profit category
  • Honourable Maurizio Bevilacqua, P.C. – Public Service category

During the Canada Post labour disruption, some City services and programs may be affected. The City is committed to ensuring that residents and businesses are able to access services and programs with minimal disruption.

RECAP FROM OCTOBER

We broke ground at 9511 Weston Rd. to mark the start of construction for the City’s 11th fire station. Once complete, Fire Station 7-12 will enhance fire safety for everyone who lives in the area.

Myself, alongside my Council Colleagues, visited the Vaughan Food Bank to help Peter Wixson sort food in preparation for Thanksgiving.

Keeping our community safe and protecting all road users is one of my top priorities as Mayor. That is why I was pleased to launch the City of Vaughan’s Automated Speed Enforcement program this morning. It’s one of the many steps we’re taking to encourage drivers to slow down in neighbourhoods where speeding is a concern. We all know speeding is reckless, but it bears repeating – slow down, follow the rules of the road and watch out for our most vulnerable road users, including students on their way to and from school. Let’s all do our part to ensure our roads are safe for everyone.
