A Note from our Executive Director
Dear Friends,
On November 11th we will pause and reflect on the courage of the great men and women of America who have served in the armed forces, both in a time of war, and peace. This veterans Day we will honor all those who fought for our freedom, many of whom have paid the ultimate sacrifice, by ensuring our programs and services remain vibrant and accessible to all those living with ALS.
As we recognize their service with our heartfelt gratitude, we know that those who have served in the military are twice as likely to be diagnosed with ALS. This is a brutal reality we see every day at the Greater Sacramento Chapter-approximately 20% of the ALS patients who walk through our doors have served in the military. The war, the year, the age, the gender, the race, all take a backseat to the disease-ALS does not discriminate and can strike anyone, at any time.
Our care Services team can coordinate their care, ensure their VA benefits are maximized, and offer the support services to empower them to live their life to the fullest, but we cannot offer them a treatment to halt the disease, yet. The irony of losing everything to a disease after giving so much is a heartbreaking reality for all those who have served us and are now living with ALS.
Our programs and services are one of the few available lifelines for Veterans who are living with ALS and need emotional support, and assistance with coordinating their care, providing emergency transportation, loaned durable medical equipment and ALS specialized care. We hope you will consider paying tribute to these men and women by making a donation to support the work of The ALS association Greater Sacramento Chapter.
For more information on how you can get involved and help Veterans living with ALS, please call 9916-979-9265.
All together now,
Amy Sugimoto

The 2018 Walk to Defeat ALS was an awesome event, and we thank you for helping us achieve our 2018 goal! Every dollar donated makes a huge difference in the programs and services offered by The ALS association, Greater Sacramento Chapter.
Every year we have an estimated 600 people walk through our doors looking for support group meetings, information, resources and referrals, specialized ALS medical care at one of our Certified Centers of Excellence, loaned durable medical equipment, speech communication devices, and patient & caregiver grants. All of these programs and services are vital lifelines to the ALS community, and as the only organization in the Greater Sacramento Region providing these services, your support and donations are what makes it all come to life. The more dollars we raise, the more we're able to accomplish, and the closer we'll be to fulfilling our vision of a world without ALS.
We thank you for your donations. If you have additional donations you would like to make in support of the Sacramento Chapter Walk to Defeat ALS Team, please click below.

Precise ALS Worm Model Gives Insight into How Motor Neurons Die
Why motor neurons die in ALS largely remains a mystery. In a study funded by The ALS Association, Dr. Anne Hart, professor of neuroscience at the Carney Institute for Brain Science at Brown University, and her colleagues gained insight into why some types of motor neurons die, while other don’t. A paper about the study was recently published in PLOS Genetics.
