News and Events for Larchmont Residents
From the Mayor

Happy Halloween Larchmonsters!

Don’t despair – the rained out Ragamuffin Parade has been rescheduled for this Sunday, October 27 th at 2PM. Get your costumes on and join us on Larchmont Avenue for this fun annual tradition.

Usually fall is when we begin slowing down, getting ready for the coming winter.
Not this year! After many, many years, the redesign of Constitution Park (next to Village Hall) is set to begin.

You may not know that the original plan for this project was presented to the Village Board in April of 2010. At that presentation the concept for the park was described as a community gathering place, “Most of all — a place to feel that you belong, and are a part of a beautiful community that values its open spaces”, said Jan Feinman, then P&T chair. A lot has changed since then – the Mayor, the Board, the Parks and Trees Committee chairs, and even the design. But one constant has been the landscape architect, Rivi Oren, who has devoted untold hours to see this vision become a reality.

Along the way, many others have dedicated their time and energy to moving the project along. First, Dee van Eyck and the Celebrate Larchmont group got the ball rolling by raising funds during the quasquicentennial (125 th ) year of Larchmont’s incorporation. That money was used in 2017 for phase one, in which the Village Green was graded and irrigation was installed. Then the Friends of Larchmont Parks, under the leadership of Laura Rosenthal, picked up the ball and brought it home. The FOLP has done an amazing job getting the community excited about the park plan and raising over $500,000!

And that brings us to now – the Village has awarded a contract to Tony Casale, Inc. and ground is being broken on Thursday, October 24 th . The new park will include a shaded French-inspired promenade running the length of the park, a common area for public concerts and performances, a sculpture garden and a children’s grove. We expect the project to be completed and the park reopened in early spring.

A huge thanks to everyone who has worked on this project over the years and to all the businesses and residents who have donated to make our new Village Green a reality!

Warmly,
Mayor Lorraine Walsh

Committee Updates
Arts Committee
On Saturday, October 5 th , the Village of Larchmont Arts Committee hosted its annual Larchmont Arts Festival in Constitution Park. For 18 years, the Festival has brought together artists from throughout the tri-state area to showcase their art.

This year, nearly 80 eighty artists participated in the festival. The featured artist was The Palmer Collective, a group of six local women photographers who presented their diverse talents in a show titled “ Elusive Stories.”

Visitors at the festival were thrilled with the art of various media and high quality. In addition to art, local Mamaroneck High School student musicians entertained the crowd with a wide variety of music performed in the gazebo. It was truly a wonderful day, celebrating the local talent and creativity in our community.

The Committee chairs Nili Asherie, Jill Brennick, and Carey Federspiel wish to thank their committee, the Mayor, Village Trustees and the DPW for all the work preparing and running the festival. And mark your calendars… next year's festival is slated for October 3.

The Committ ee also hosted music in Constitution Park over the summer. During Thursdays evening In July many of us enjoyed great bands and wonderful music. We are fortunate to have so many talented musician among us and we all look forward to next summer to hear again great music in a renovated Constitution Park.

Larchmont Environmental Committee
Town of Mamaroneck received a three-year grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to fund a public outreach and education campaign. The Town, along with the Villages of Larchmont and Mamaroneck and the Mamaroneck School District, will work together on this project over the next three years. The goal is to inspire residents, including students, to take action to reduce the amount of wasted food, divert the excess to provide food for those in need and to compost whatever scraps are left. It will reduce your food costs, help slow down climate change and connect you to the community.

Historic Preservation Task Force
HP Survey Kick-off Event October 29
The Village of Larchmont has been awarded a $10,000 grant by the Preservation League of New York State to help fund a historic-preservation survey of the Village. The survey, scheduled to begin in November, will document the private homes, municipal buildings, and neighborhood districts that might be considered for preservation. The Village has hired the preservation-planning firm Larson Fisher Associates of Woodstock, New York to conduct the survey.

To begin the process, Mayor Lorraine Walsh and Village Trustees, along with the Village’s Historic Preservation Task Force, will hold a community-wide meeting open to all Village residents. The meeting will take place at the Larchmont Village Center on October 29th at 7:30 PM. Neil Larson will present an overview of the work that his firm will engage in on behalf of the Village.

The grant award comes as a result of an application submitted by the Historic Preservation Task Force (HPTF) on behalf of the Village of Larchmont. The Task Force members are Chair Mauri Tamarin, Michael Donnelly, Denise Fletcher, Rick Lefever, Elliott Sclar, and Trustee Malcolm Frouman.

The results of the survey will provide the Board with essential information for determining whether to consider legislation that would help preserve the architectural character and historic legacy of Larchmont.
