Congregation Appreciation
I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother and sisters, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people." Philemon 1:4-7

October was Pastor Appreciation Month and the church pictured Leanne and me in the Crescent News, while we have also been given cards and gifts. We greatly appreciate the gestures and we thank you. However, we appreciate you too! We realize it takes a lot of your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness, to keep Ayersville UMC operational in a vital manner. As a means of saying thank you and as a Christmas gift to the churches, we will host a Christmas open house at the parsonage on Sunday, December 5, from 5pm to 8pm. Everyone is welcome to stop in anytime during those hours at 27770 Ayersville Pleasant Bend Rd (next to the church) for refreshments.

Expectations can get complicated when it comes to pastors and lay people. The picture you see on this page represents in humorous fashion the unrealistic expectations that a congregation can direct towards their pastor. That door can swing both ways. Pastors can have unrealistic expectations towards the congregations too. And congregants can place unrealistic expectations on themselves corporately and personally. We all know what it feels like to want to say “I’m just one person!!” Sometimes it helps to be gentle with each other and even with ourselves.

This Thanksgiving season, Leanne and I are grateful to still be serving here. Seeing new faces, that are actually familiar faces, at Ayersville, has been uniquely heartwarming for us. On Thanksgiving Day, and all year round, we should be grateful for those with which we share the mission of Christ. As Paul said to Philemon, “you have refreshed our hearts.”

At a finance meeting, the congregation’s wealthiest member decided to share a portion of his faith story. “I’m a millionaire,” he said, “and I attribute it all to the rich blessings of God in my life. I can still remember the turning point in my faith, like it was yesterday: I had just earned my first dollar and I went to a youth meeting that night. The speaker was a missionary who told about his work. I knew that I only had a dollar bill and had to either give it all to God’s work or nothing at all. So at that moment I decided to give my whole dollar to God. I believe that God blessed that decision, and that is why I am a rich man today.”

When he finished and sat down, the chair of the stewardship committee leaned over and said: “Wonderful story! I dare you to do it again!”
