Message from Executive Director Judy Kuhl
|
Happy Fall,
The Chamber was busy last month! We held our first Golf Classic and it was so much fun for all. We are hoping for this to be an annual event. Thank you to all who sponsored, donated, and volunteered at the event. It was really appreciated.
Leadership Lincoln finally got off to a start and it looks like it is going well. By the time you read this, I will have attended a virtual Brand USA conference that was supposed to have taken place in London. We are focusing on promoting tourism for 2021. The tourism industry has taken quite a hit due to COVID, and since we live in a tourism community, this has affected us all.
This has been such a rough time for many people, so this Thanksgiving we all need to be thankful for what we do have. I hope that you will be able to safely see your friends and family, even if it is virtually. Happy Thanksgiving!
Judy Kuhl
Executive Director

October Member Spotlight:
Advantage Real Estate
|
Advantage Real Estate is owned by Bonnie and Freddy Saxton and is one of the top locally-owned real estate agencies on the Oregon Coast. They strive to be the best trained and most informed real estate organization in the marketplace, offering both residential and commercial property sales.
In 2000, Bonnie and several of the other brokers at Advantage Real Estate were working for another real estate company when the owner decided to close the business. Wanting to stay together, the team started Advantage Real Estate. They have now been in business for 20 years and have been Newport Chamber members since the beginning.
Together, the team at Advantage has a combined 250 plus years of professional real estate experience and is the only agency in Lincoln County with four Lincoln County Realtor of the Year recipients.
Members of their team take community volunteering seriously, and several brokers sit on the boards of the Lincoln County Board of Realtors, hospitals, airports, Habitat for Humanity, and CASA, and volunteer at many more organizations.
Advantage Real Estate has stayed a Chamber member for twenty years because they value supporting the community. They have always been very generous in sponsoring Newport Chamber events, most recently as the Beverage Cart Sponsor at the Chamber’s Golf Classic in October.

IT’S BOLD! IT’S COLORFUL! IT’S WILD! IT’S FUN!
What is IT? It’s Ripley’s Believe It or Not World of Adventure (formerly known as Mariner Square) and THEY are the November Beautification Location Award recipient!
Located at 250 SW Bay Blvd. in the historic Bayfront, they recently re-opened after 11 months of closure due to their extensive remodeling and then the virus. The brightly colored exterior walls immediately catch the eye and there’s no way one can miss the giant gorilla and growling lions (made of recycled tires) and the Hulk (made of scrap metal) out front to greet one and all, old and young. A wooden octopus sculpture offers several outdoor seats. Also not to be missed is a slice of a giant Sequoia over 2,500 years old and weighing over 2,200 lbs. (Please note that this tree was not cut down… it fell on its own).
Multiple flower beds, their facades painted with underwater scenes, showcase blooming flowers, trees, and shrubs.
We want to thank Ripley's Believe It or Not World of Adventure for bringing cheer and smiles on a daily basis, especially during these trying times.

Shamus Gamache
Shamus Gamache is an Engineering Supervisor at Central Lincoln P.U.D. in Newport. What he likes best about his job is leading an industry to serve the public with an essential service, which is electricity. When he’s not at work he likes spending time outdoors with his wife and sons. We asked him which leader inspires him and he replied with Nelson Mandela. He loves living in Lincoln County because it is such a tight knit community and considers it perfect. Ambassador Spotlight:
Donna Carter
Oregon Coast Aquarium
The Oregon Coast Aquarium was founded in 1984 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located on 19 acres on the Yaquina Bay estuary in Newport. Since opening in 1992, it has welcomed more than 15 million visitors from around the world. It is the only aquarium in Oregon accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), maintaining this distinguished designation since 2001.
The Aquarium is frequently rated by travel writers as one of the top ten aquariums in the U.S. because of its naturalistic marine life exhibits, educational programming, and strong sense of place on the Pacific coast.
As one of Oregon’s top tourist attractions, the Aquarium is a vital educational resource for the State. The Aquarium strives to be a center of excellence for ocean literacy and plays an active role in conservation and animal rehabilitation efforts. Exhibits range from the sea shore to the deep oceans, including sea lions, seals, otters, turkey vultures, and a shark tube where you can walk in and experience sharks, rays and various fish swimming all around you.
The Aquarium is currently open from 9:30am to 5pm daily unless otherwise posted. Online reservations are required for non-members, and Aquarium members can visit without reservations anytime during regular business hours.
The Aquarium has been a very active Chamber member for more than 25 years. As a community business and tourist attraction, their membership with the Chamber provides credibility and increases their visibility. The Chamber serves as an advocate on behalf of the Aquarium and both organizations have enjoyed a very strong, collaborative partnership over the years.
Donna Carter represents the Aquarium as a Chamber Ambassador. “I chose to be a Chamber Ambassador because the Chamber and Ambassadors have been very welcoming to me since I returned to Newport after a long time living away,” said Donna. People in the Chamber remembered her from when she lived and worked in the community previously and helped to make her feel like she had never left. “I want to be able to extend this same type of welcome to new members in the community, as well as build relationships with all community members.”
Donna has maintained an active Ambassador role for nearly a year despite most of her tenure occurring during the COVID pandemic. She volunteers at events such as the yard sale that was held this past summer and she’s active in fundraising efforts on behalf of the Chamber. She has enthusiastically contributed her unique point of view and knack for planning events. The Chamber appreciates Donna and all the experience she brings to the Ambassadors.
