The giant anteater is an iconic South American mammal, listed as vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Much of its home in the Brazilian Cerrado forest has been converted to agricultural land. This includes a large network of roads and highways.
Unfortunately, vehicle collisions with wildlife has caused a significant number of fatalities amongst local species, with the giant anteater being the most affected.
Miller Park Zoo is proud to support the ICAS (Wild Animal Conservation Institute) with the Anteaters and Highways Project. Field work in Brazil is being done to study giant anteaters, including their health, foraging habits and range. With our contribution, we have been able to sponsor a juvenile anteater named "Jane". Jane has been fitted with a GPS tracker to allow us to see her location in real time. This crucial data allows ICAS to devise solutions for protecting giant anteaters and other species in the region.
This Giving ZOODay, December 3rd, please consider a donation to The Miller Park Zoological Society. Your donation will help to save the lives of giant anteaters and other species as we continue to support conservation initiatives across the the globe.
