One of the trends among universities both small and large, is that many are in the red. Even multimillion-dollar schools.

The theme? The enrollment cliff is coming.

Indicators of a school in this situation include two key factors:

  • A significant drop in enrollment year over year.
  • A graduation rate that does not meet the national average.

How are schools addressing this problem? They are handling it by making cuts. Wherever they can cut expenses and improve revenues - whether that means eliminating academic programs or sports. Schools decide which programs are their “priority” programs. Typically, the programs that are kept are the ones that attract the most students, such as STEM programs.

Students and families must be aware of, and ensure that they are researching and applying to schools that offer the student's chosen program as a priority program. It’s simply not worth the risk of a program getting eliminated after your student has already enrolled, or worse, completed freshman year.

PCCI's goal is to find the best fit at a school that is academically, socially and financially most appropriate, thereby putting your student in the best position to succeed in college and beyond. Allow PCCI to help set you up for success.

Early Action

Most early action deadlines start November 1 (although there are plenty in October or even September depending on the program you’re looking at, like theatre and musical theatre, which often require the candidate to make it through a prescreening process first) and run through December. If you're qualified and you're considering a school anyway, apply early action.

Applying early action is very important as you're much more likely to receive scholarship dollars when you apply early

while the funding is available.

Campus Visits

Juniors, Thanksgiving break is NOT the time to visit schools. Neither is Christmas vacation because the college students will be gone. Moreover, their winter break starts before Christmas and lasts until late January. It is a good time to do virtual tours of the colleges and it’s worth noting that these tours can be long. Map out your plan to virtually visit 2 schools per day by the end of December. Then, make plans to visit those schools in person during February and April vacation weeks. Download PCCI's handy College Visit Score Sheet to rate your college visit!

Seniors, from December through April, be sure to attend your college/university’s Senior Day, Open House or Admitted Student’s Day, which is usually a lot of fun and lasts about 4-5 hours. Highly recommend this especially if you’ve only been on campus once for the general tour.
