Another Train Show in April - Next Year

Last month, I wrote about opportunities we have as an organization, and our willingness to seize them. Well, here is one we are going to take advantage of - another train show in 2023.

On April 28 & 29, 2023, the Amherst Railway Society will be hosting and managing the Northeast Large Scale Train Show at the Eastern States Exposition fairgrounds in West Springfield. This show will be smaller than the Railroad Hobby Show (probably only one building), but still a major event.

Large scale model railroading is an important part of the hobby and an important connection for Amherst since we have our own Garden Railroad Special Interest Group now, and planning for a garden railroad on our property in Palmer is well underway.

We expect all the major large scale manufacturers and distributors will be at the show, as well as some large scale operating layouts.

Personally, the big G-scale trains really pull me in. They’re hefty, the horns, bells, and clickety-clack all seem so real. These are fascinating trains.

So, mark your calendar, because this is going to be a fun event.

The Art of Railroad Photography

Award-winning photographer, Dee Matyas, finds the grace, elegance, and beauty in the often gritty world of railroading. On November 9, Dee will present her prototype railroad photography, and describe how she gets the shots. This will be an entertaining session with photographs that everyone can appreciate and enjoy.

The presentation is open to the public and can be attended on Zoom (click here to request an invitation), or in-person at:

December 3 & 4, 2022

On December 3 & 4, 2022, the Amherst Belt Lines will be participating in the New England Model Train Expo in Marlboro, Massachusetts. The Belt Lines will have a large operating modular layout running both days.

This is a big show with multiple operating layouts and many model railroad vendors - and a fun holiday feel.

The model railroad world has lost a true artist. Dick Elwell passed away on October 21, 2022 after a 15-year battle with cancer.

Story

The Kids ON TRACK project layout is growing. We plan to have the layout at Edaville's Christmas Festival of Lights. And, following the Railroad Hobby Show in January, we are taking the layout on-the-road.

EXTRAINAGANZA

If you are in Maine in November or December, the Great Falls Model Railroad Club in Auburn, Maine is well worth a visit. The club hosts EXTRAINAGANZA on two weekends - November 19 & 20, and November 25, 26 & 27. All model railroads will be running, and there will be special activities for children, including a chance to be a student engineer on the beautifully done HO-scale layout.

Then, on December 10, the club holds their annual Surplus Assets Sale of model railroad equipment. They also have an extensive list of books for sale.
