As part of the Sunshine Committee’s Mission In 2025-26 we are going to show recognition for the contribution by one or more docents each month with a write-up in the Palette Newsletter.
This month, we are proud to recognize two extraordinary volunteers Monica Kotlarsky and Leanne McAuliffe.
If you’ve ever attended docent training, you’ve likely met Leanne McAuliffe and recognized her right away by her charming New Zealand accent! Leanne joined the Art Docents of Los Gatos in 2018 and currently serves as our Lead Coach in the Training Program as well as a member of our Board of Directors. She has made numerous impactful changes to our training program, streamlining and improving the process for new docents.
Leanne loves being an Art Docent because it allows her to share art and spark curiosity in students, while also being part of the strong sense of community that connects our organization, the schools, and the broader Los Gatos community.
She especially enjoys teaching the younger grades, appreciating their sense of wonder, honesty, and open-mindedness when exploring art. Her favorite lesson to teach is Romare Bearden, which beautifully blends music, art, and collage. “Watching students take joy in creating a work of art that reflects their lives or expresses their feelings is truly heartwarming,” she says.
You can often find Leanne in the office, always willing to lend a hand. We are so grateful for her leadership and dedication to the Art Docents of Los Gatos!
Monica Kotlarsky has been an Art Docent since 2021. A former art teacher, Monica discovered the Art Docents of Los Gatos while still living in the UK, as she explored ways to get involved in her new community.
Since joining, Monica has become an integral part of our organization—teaching art lessons in the classroom, serving on the Curriculum Committee, and helping with docent training by presenting print lessons to new trainees. Monica may be small, but she brings big energy to everything she does. She’s always prepared well in advance and takes her role as a docent very seriously, bringing professionalism, enthusiasm, and creativity to every lesson.
Monica recalls a heartwarming classroom moment that captures the joy of teaching art. “After teaching one of my first kindergarten classes, I ended up in the middle of one of the best group hugs of my life. My hope was that the moment was the reflection of a lesson well taught and well received. That’s really what it’s all about!”
Her enthusiasm and thoughtful preparation inspire students and fellow docents alike, making her a cherished member of our docent family.
We’re so grateful for Monica and Leanne dedication to our program. Thank you both for all you do!
