From the Director's Desk...
|
It seems that baking is always something I can write about. I've loved baking since I was young. My mother was the best baker in the world as far as I and my family were concerned. Of course, I had to re-learn how to bake with Gluten-Free flour due to a diagnosis of celiac disease, but despite that, I still love to bake, and my family loves my apple and pecan pies. They always make sure I will be bringing them for Thanksgiving dessert.
My mother claimed to be an excellent cook because she was a chemist. (Her college degree was in chemistry, and she worked for a paper company as a chemist.) This leads me to a book I've recently read: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. It is a hoot. The main character Elizabeth Gott is not an average woman, especially not in the 1960s when the book is set. She vaguely reminded me of my mother. They probably would have been friends had they known each other, because my mom was not an average woman either. (My mom was a chemist, married to a minister, with 5 children, a full-time job, her widowed mother living next door, her widower father-in-law living in our house, 3 dogs, and an innumerable number of cats slinking around.) I hope you will read the book. If you do, let me know if you enjoyed it as much as I did. Check it out at the library!
