Plant a Tree
“The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” - Nelson Henderson.
The message that the most meaningful things we create may benefit people long after we’re gone has been expressed by many. It’s about planting seeds today, not necessarily for our own reward, but for future generations.
A tree is a classic metaphor for human experience. Each part of the tree mirrors a different stage, challenge, or dimension of life. My favorite is the seasonal metaphor of trees for life transitions.
• Spring (Renewal): A time for fresh beginnings, planting new ideas, and entering "Get Mode" to drive growth.
• Summer (Flourishing): A peak period of energy, connection, and outward contribution.
• Autumn (Letting Go): A reminder to shed what no longer serves you—like dropping dead wood or old habits—to conserve energy.
• Winter (Dormancy and Reset): A necessary period of rest, inner reflection, and healing before the next cycle begins.
Seeds are a metaphor as well. They serve as a rich symbol for potential, transformation, patience, and new beginnings across personal, spiritual, and educational domains.
In this Thanksgiving month, let us remember those who have come before us and planted seeds. Let us experience potential transformation with patience for a new beginning across our personal, spiritual and educational needs. Let us live under the shade of trees and experience medical wonders, technological advancement, travel accommodations, global connections, educational developments, and conveniences we could have never imagined. (as in Amazon, online banking, driverless cars, Uber Eats)
And finally, let us be grateful for those who had foresight, ambition, confidence and at times fought to bring forth the dawn of the new era of advancement to our lives and world at large.
Sending warm wishes for the beautiful autumn season and a Happy Thanksgiving and may you celebrate this season, gathering with others to share a meal and fellowship.
With love and gratitude,
Hilda
