NCC takes National Apprenticeship Week to new levels
National Apprenticeship Week is a nationwide celebration that showcases the successes and value of Registered Apprenticeships for re-building the economy, advancing racial and gender equity, and supporting underserved communities. President Biden said this about apprenticeships in his Proclamation: “For many workers, especially those without college degrees, apprenticeships create a critical pathway to good-paying jobs. Registered apprentices earn while they learn. . .Supporting Registered Apprenticeships is a key part of my economic vision to build an economy from the bottom up and the middle out: an economy that works for everyone.”

New Century Careers celebrated the week in a big way!

  • Pittsburgh City Council issued a proclamation on Nov. 15 acknowledging the value of apprenticeships. Thanks to Councilman Bruce Kraus for sponsoring it.

  • President and CEO Neil Ashbaugh was interviewed by Newsy news service and gave a presentation about the NCC Registered Robotics Apprenticeship Program at the 5th Annual Meeting of the ARM Institute on November 16.

  • Daily social media posts pointed out various advantages of apprenticeships for employers and employees alike.

NCC welcomes Sarah Bast as
Student Services & Development Associate
Sarah Bast is a recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and minors in Exercise Science and Sociology. She is originally from Long Island, New York, but certainly has an affinity for Pittsburgh after spending her college years here. She also plans to pursue her Master’s degree in Public Administration.

Sarah’s work as a First Year Mentor for Pitt’s Office of New Student Programs, planning events to acclimate new students to their surroundings, is ideal background for her position as the Student Services and Development Associate at New Century Careers. Sarah will be working with trainees in the Manufacturing 2000 pre-apprenticeship program, as well as assisting with grant writing and communicating with stakeholders in the region. Sarah’s interest in training comes naturally. Her mother is a Work-Based Learning Coordinator at GC Tech in Levittown, NY.

"Working at New Century Careers has been such a rewarding experience. The different facets of my work here reflect the type of work I had hoped to do after graduating college. Doing this work with such a great team makes it even better!"

MANUFACTURING 2000 highlight: Calvin McDonald
Having previously worked as a professional barber at his local shop, Calvin became aware of New Century Careers after seeing promotional material at one of the shops in his neighborhood.
Calvin originally came from Mississippi where his father would talk about the legacy of metal workers in his family, a topic that piqued his interest.

Upon completion of the MANUFACTURING 2000 (M2K) program, Calvin accepted a position at Formlogic. During his time as a trainee, he obtained five National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) credentials, completed nine NIMS projects, and achieved seventy metalworking skills.

His advice to younger generations who have not been exposed to the manufacturing industry, is that it along with other trades are just as important and needed today as they were decades ago.

"This program can give you some purpose and great opportunities in life. Don't fear the math!"
