Community-Owned Commercial Real Estate
is Having a Moment
"Ortiz's new landlord is the neighborhood where she grew up. In October, she signed a lease with the Kensington Corridor Trust for the storefront at 3314 Kensington Avenue. She's the Trust's first commercial tenant. It's a new type of commercial real estate entity that, as previously covered in Next City, is attempting to put control over the corridor's future economic development into the surrounding community's hands."

A Village for Salt Lakers Experiencing Homelessness is Designed for Self-Sufficiency
After much community input, "Salt Lake City's city council voted in favor of a project to build a small community of tiny homes for people experiencing chronic homelessness, in a project that organizers hope could be a model for other cities." Organizers acknowledge that broader, long-term solutions are needed -- but in the meantime they hope this village "can actually help them get in sustained housing and become members of the community, rather than being isolated."
