Community Partnership - Christmas Cards for Nursing Home Residents

From November 1 through December 10, the library will have a card station set up for all patrons, families and friends to stop and decorate/sign a card. The cards done during this time will be donated to NSS Life to be used for their Christmas Card program. The following information was provided by our local NSS Life office located in Canonsburg, PA:

  • Each holiday season, our organization accepts donations of holiday cards, letters, and drawings from local community groups throughout the greater Pittsburgh area, and our members across the country. We donate these cards to the residents of nursing homes located in the greater Pittsburgh area, in the hopes of spreading holiday cheer through a small act of kindness to those who may be alone this holiday season. Each resident receives multiple cards from different people/organizations! Last year we received over 6,000 cards that were donated to over 1,500 nursing home residents. This year our goal is to receive over 9,000 cards and make donations to over 2,250 residents.

Our card station will be set up for all programs and each day we are open for those picking up materials. Stop by and sign one card or ten cards. Don't have time to sit and create with us? No worries. You can create your own cards at home and drop them off to the library to be added to the overall collection. Let's all take a moment to help spread joy this holiday season.

*The Chartiers-Houston Community Library is proud to be a PA Forward Gold Star Library. As part of our PA Forward recertification each year, we look for ways to work with other local community partners to promote the five literacies; Basic, Information, Health, Financial, and Civic & Social Literacies. You can learn more about the PA Foward Initiative by visiting their website at https://paforward.org/pa-forward-star-program/

Storytime Sessions - Thursday mornings @ 11:30 am

Our storytimes are held on Thursday mornings at 11:30 am. Our storytimes are set up as a Family Style session where grownups are encouraged to attend and participate with their child. Sessions include stories, songs, the calendar and activities for our preschoolers, as well as board books, puzzles, and puppets for all ages (sessions are Family Style). We have a lot of fun planned for this month! The Chartiers-Houston Community Library is proud to be a PA Forward Gold Star Library. • Real-life inspiration: The book's fictional queen, Hathorkare, is based on Hatshepsut, a real-life female pharaoh who successfully ruled Egypt for nearly 20 years before her stepson tried to erase her from history.
  • Did you know...? - Fiona Davis started out as an actress and designer on Broadway before she became an author.
