HLT Preserves More Open Space and Farmland

The newly preserved open space property in Readington Township

On October 24th, Readington Township acquired 5 acres on Readington Road which is now preserved public open space. HLT obtained a grant from Hunterdon County that paid for 50% of the purchase price. The property contains Holland Brook as well as wetlands, headwaters, and active river area. The property is adjacent to two preserved farms to the north and south. HLT is proud to have helped preserve this property to both expand the network of preserved land and protect its natural resources, including the stream corridor. HLT partnered with Readington Township, Hunterdon County, and the NJ Green Acres program to make this preservation happen.

On November 7th, HLT preserved a 22-acre farm on Spring Mills Road in Holland Township. HLT obtained funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) under its Agricultural Conservation Easement Program to help fund this farmland preservation. The farm is close to hundreds of acres of preserved farmland and contains a tributary to the Spring Mills Brook which is a Category-1 stream. In addition to NRCS, the New Jersey State Agricultural Development Committee and Holland Township were instrumental in ensuring that this farm was preserved through both their funding and their commitment to farmland preservation. HLT also wants to thank the property owner, John Schafer, who chose to preserve his farm.

Eagle Scout Enhances HLT Preserves

Connor Runk of local Boy Scout Troop 194 recently completed his Eagle Scout project with HLT, building and installing a new kiosk at the Anderson Road trailhead for Holland Highlands Preserve and bluebird boxes at several others. We are so impressed with his hard work throughout this project and are grateful for his valuable contributions to our preserves!
