National Public Lands Day (NPLD) at Lake Lucie Conservation Area

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Volunteer shoutout:

Simply Awesome: Our NPLD Volunteers

The Environmental Protection Division (EPD) sends a big thank you to all 23 volunteers who attended the annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD) event at Lake Lucie Conservation Area. Our appreciation extends to Susan Woodbery from the Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) for generously providing snacks and refreshments, ensuring all volunteers fueled their bodies while protecting the environment. One last thanks to the dedicated Green PLACE team for providing materials and on-site support. Together, we removed an outstanding 1,371 feet of fencing (over 3,000 pounds), returning an environmentally sensitive land back to an area free of impeding man-made structures. This accomplishment was made possible by dedicated volunteers who went above and beyond their original time commitment. Initially scheduled to volunteer from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., they generously extended their efforts until 11:30 a.m., contributing an additional hour of service to complete the project. Their willingness to give extra time reflects their strong commitment to environmental stewardship and the community.

Lend a hand and make a difference in Orange County's environment and community.

Green PLACE Hiking Spree

Explore Orange County's Trails

The 2026-2027 Green PLACE Hiking Spree offers a fun way to explore Orange County’s natural lands while working toward rewards along the way (see image below).

Participants can hike any of 40 participating trails, record their treks and earn rewards as they reach new milestones. Whether you are looking for a short walk, a new outdoor adventure or a chance to visit a Green PLACE property you have not explored before, the Hiking Spree offers plenty of opportunities to step out into nature.

Monthly guided hikes will also give participants a chance to explore select Green PLACE properties with staff, learn more about local ecosystems and count the hike toward their Hiking Spree progress.

The spree runs through April 22, 2027, giving participants several months to complete trails at their own pace. Visit Green PLACE to learn more about participating trails, rewards, guided hikes and how to get started.
