Artwork Spotlight
Thangka
Tibet, Asia
Thangkas are a Titetan Buddhist painting on cotton or silk. They usually depict a Buddhist deity, scene or mandala. They are meant to be displayed on monastery walls or as part of religious festivals.
Thangkas are very intricate with many small figures. A central deity is surrounded by other figures in a symmetrical composition.
Thangkas are often used as teaching tools for monastery students.
The thangka at the Altharetta Yeargin Art Museum is from the 19th century.
1st Grade Roadshows
In the month of October, we visited the 1st grade students at 6 SBISD elementary schools. We stopped by: Cedarbrook, Hollibrook, Nottingham, Rummel Creek, Spring Shadows and Sherwood. The students have really enjoyed learning about the art of making alejibres from Mexico and then making their own paper version.
2nd Grade Field Trips
We had 4 schools bring their 2nd graders to us this in October. Housman, Frostwood, Spring Shadows and Sherwood all came to visit us! The students learned about the museum, did a scavenger hunt and made an art project.
Middle School Field Trips
The Pre AP art students at Spring Oaks Middle School, under the supervision of their art teacher, Ms. Smollen, came to visit the museum this month. They used the museums resources to get reference photos for their upcoming rodeo art. While they were here, they also worked on some sample projects for our Frida Kahlo activities on Saturday.
Last Saturday at the Museum
Frida Kahlo
October 30, 2021
Our Last Saturday event for October was all about the artist Frida Kahlo.
We started out by reading the book Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos by Monica Brown to the children. When we finished the book, the children worked on 3 different projects, all based on the artwork of Kahlo. We also had 1 group of parents who worked on teacher-led Kahlo peg dolls.
Thank you to everyone who came out and joined us!
A huge thank you to all of our high school students who volunteered and helped set up materials, worked with the students and then stayed to help clean up.
We look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events!
