Dinner Spots are FULL for the Growing Community Social

We’re excited to have a full house on Thursday, November 7th, at the 2019 Growing Community Social! However, we are over capacity for the meal.

If you haven’t RSVPd yet, we still hope to see you at the pre-dinner programming : tours of the WISER Center and SUNY Potsdam Campus Food Pantry, and an informational poster session, oh my! Pre-dinner programming is happening 5-6:30 with check-in at Stowell Hall (the entrance facing Timerman Hall) with no maximum capacity. All are still encouraged to attend this portion of the event and to support the SUNY Potsdam Campus Food Pantry with donations (as you are able).

Donations will be collected at check-in. Perishable and nonperishable items are both acceptable. Items in high demand are shelf stable fruits like apples and bananas, single-serve yogurts, string cheese, small packs of cheese, eggs, pasta and sauces, brown rice, low-sugar peanut butter, whole wheat bread, multigrain bread, dry beans, canned beans, whole wheat tortillas, and salsa.

We can't wait to see everyone! Thank you for exceeding our expectations.

Volunteer Opportunities

Thanksgiving is just around the corner and our community meal partners need your help.

The meals keep going, even when students leave. But only if there are enough community volunteers to make it happen

11/25 (Monday) : Campus Kitchens Project needs volunteers for their Thanksgiving meal from 1pm-8pm (all shifts).

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm: Prep and Cook ,

11/27 (Wednesday) : The Canton United Methodist Church Free Will Dinner needs volunteers for their Thanksgiving meal from 4-5:30 pm.

Cultivating Gratitude with Nature's Storehouse

From now until Thanksgiving (11/28), Nature’s Storehouse will be asking folks at the register if they would like to donate a dollar to support GardenShare. This year, the dollars will go farther thanks to an anonymous matching donor! The donor will match any donations up to $500! All money will go towards supporting our programs and efforts working towards a just food system in St. Lawrence County.

If you find yourself at Nature’s Storehouse this month, please consider giving - and definitely thank them for being such a great community partner!

End of Market Season

It’s that time of year again. Much of this year’s bounty has already been harvested and the farmers markets are officially closed for the season. There will be no winter markets.

Thank you to all our market managers, volunteers, and vendors who came together to make this yet another successful year! And a special thank you to Field & Fork Network for partnering with GardenShare to bring Double Up Food Bucks to all five markets.

Meet our CBL Students

If you’ve been to the Canton Farmers Market at all this fall, you may have come across one of our lovely St. Lawrence University CBL Students volunteering at the market manager’s table. Saige and Quinn have been a huge help at the markets since September, processing card transactions, counting tokens, and chatting with customers and volunteers alike!

Although market season is over, we will still have their help in the office for a few more weeks and we couldn’t be happier!

Here’s what they had to say about their CBL experience so far:

Saige:

My CBL with GardenShare has been the most enjoyable class I've ever taken! Assisting at the market was a lot of fun and I met so many kind people who're committed to helping their community. I'd say my favorite part of my CBL was volunteering at the Fight Hunger 5K. I was able to take photos of the event and assist with directing the participants to the registration area. Everyone had such a great time and the event raised over 10,000 dollars!

Quinn:

I am excited to be working with GardenShare because of my interest in advocacy work and community outreach. Food is something that is integral to our survival as individuals, communities, and wider cultures. GardenShare's focus on dignity and respect in food accessibility makes me excited to know that as an organization, we treat people as an entire being and not just another person in line. I hope to carry the lessons I've learned and for the rest of my time at GardenShare into working intimately with whatever community I end up in after I leave St. Lawrence
