Educational Endowment Fund (EEF) Deadline December 1st
The Educational Endowment Fund (EEF) provides professional development grants of up to $500 to individuals who have been members of TCA for at least 12 months prior to application.
Grants are awarded for:
- Course work toward completion of a graduate degree
- Activities such as original research, conference attendance or specialized study
- Other professional development or continuing education activities

The EEF Committee reviews and approves applications for EEF grants, and reserves the right to decline giving an award(s) in any year, if suitable application(s) is/are not received, as determined by the EEF Committee.

Take Action: Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Act
|
|
Congress is considering new legislation that would provide funding for school counselors. On Sept. 12, Senator Jeff Merkley (D-OR.) and Representative Katherine Clark (D-MA) introduced the Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Act to provide funding to states to improve the staffing ratios for school counselors, psychologists and school social workers.
The American Counseling Association (ACA) supports this legislation and encourages you to let your representatives in Washington know how important it is.
The Elementary and Secondary School Counseling Act would establish two five-year renewable grant programs to staff elementary and secondary schools with school counselors, psychologists and social workers, effectively by providing federal grants to states to disburse to school districts. The new formula would provide funding for all 50 states, and because matching funds are required, states receiving the grants would show a commitment to improving student mental health and wellness.

Free Training Over Rules/Regulations Related to the Military Interstate Compact
The Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission is hosting a free training on the rules and regulations under Texas Education Code 162 for military connected students transitioning in and out of Texas public schools.
The training will be held from 1:00-3:30pm on Thursday, December 13 at Central Texas College, Building #122, in Killeen, Texas.

The month-long GenTX initiative
by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is designed to encourage students to apply for college and complete the FAFSA. It coincides with the opening of the 2019-2020 FAFSA and TASFA. It combines the statewide College Application and Financial Aid Awareness campaign, the American College Application Campaign® (ACAC), and the 60x30TX-Texas Challenge to Reach Higher into one powerful month to encourage students to go to college. GenTX Month also coincides with the opening of the 2019-20 FAFSA and TASFA. Break out your college garb and decorate the halls with college pennants.

Mindful Eating for the Holidays
|
|
The holiday season can be a wonderful time of year that involves spending time with family and friends, but for many, it’s also a time that involves struggling with choices surrounding food and self-care. As counselors, we know the benefits of mindfulness for our clients’ mental health, but mindfulness can also be a wonderful tool we can use when it comes to our choices around health as well!
Tips for eating mindfully this holiday season:
- Take time to reflect before you eat. Notice any stress, emotions, or thoughts. This simple pause may help you to be more aware of reasons you are tempted to mindlessly overeat.
- Sit down to eat. With all the stress of the holidays, it can be easy to eat on the go. Make sure you are setting aside time to slow down and enjoy your meals. When you slow down, you may realize you can really savor a few bites of a holiday treat and get much more satisfaction than if you mindlessly overindulge.
- Set aside time for relaxation and quiet. Your schedule may be packed with holiday activities, so make sure you have a little peace for yourself, even if it’s for a few minutes. Caring for yourself in this way might help you realize you don’t need to seek comfort in other ways, such as through food or alcohol.
- Think of your future self - picture yourself in January and imagine how you can be kind to your future self by taking time to focus on healthy habits now.
