Future Leaders of Eastern

The Student Activities Office offers an 8-week leadership program every semester called the LEAP Cohort. Fifteen students participated in the Fall 2024 Cohort, where they selected a mentor (a faculty or staff member at Eastern) and attended weekly sessions focused on learning applicable leadership strategies and building their foundational skills (based on the ACPA and NASPA Professional Competencies). They engaged in enriching topics ranging from Influential Leadership to The Power of Networking.

The Spring 2025 Cohort will start on February 20th, 2025, and will meet every Thursday through April. Please email leadership@easternct.edu for more information on the upcoming Cohort.

Institute For Sustainability

Did you know students are composting food scraps and other organic waste, keeping them out of the waste stream? This is one way that Eastern students are leading efforts to improve the environmental impact of campus operations. Offices across campus and students living in the residence halls drop their food scraps at the collection site each week and student volunteers deliver it to the campus community garden compost pile where food waste becomes a valuable soil amendment for growing vegetables there next spring. We collect about 20 pounds weekly and are working to increase this volume. If your student wants to learn more about this project, or get involved, they can email:

greencampuscommittee@easternct.edu. Stay tuned to learn more about student-led sustainability initiatives across campus.

University Life

The transition to university life brings many feelings – among them worry, fear, excitement, and joy. Each week, both students and families are learning to better navigate the day-to-day separately. November brings a reprieve from academic demands with Thanksgiving recess. While having your student home can be a happy reunion, it may also appear that something is different.

Your student has adjusted to independent decision-making around scheduling and prioritizing. Habits such as eating, sleeping, and fitness may look very different. You may spend the break getting to know each other again – from new skills and interests to shifting worldviews.

Likely your student’s hometown friends are also on break. While family time may be a hope and expectation for parents and caregivers, your student may be eagerly anticipating reunification with friends. These veritable strangers in your home may prioritize time with friends over time with you.

While this can be a painful hurdle in the caregiver-child relationship, it is a developmentally appropriate one. According to Erik Erikson’s stages of development, your student is both developing a sense of personal identity and building meaningful relationships with others. This can lead to adults feeling left behind. Just as it is normal for your student to be trying on different personas, it is normal for you to miss the child you once knew.

So what do you do with this human in your home that would rather go out with friends than share a meal with you? Know your priorities and identify where you can bend. Are you willing to spend the break upset with each other because you drew a line in the sand? Or are you willing to delineate pockets of quality time to enjoy the company of your student. The good news in all of this – just as the pendulum swings away, often it swings back as well. In the meantime, communication is key. Having a proactive conversation around time expectations may prevent misunderstandings and disappointment.

We hope that you and your student are able to make time this month for whatever brings you joy and rest.

RESIDENCE HALLS CLOSING FOR THANKSGIVING & WINTER BREAKS:

It’s hard to believe that the end-of-year holidays are upon us! This brings us to a time to start planning for final exams and travel as the residence halls close for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Winter Breaks. The information below has been emailed to all residential students. Please review carefully so that you can support your student in these end-of-semester expectations.

THANKSGIVING BREAK: November 26th – December 1st

When Do the Residence Halls Close: First-year student halls and Niejadlik Hall will CLOSE for Thanksgiving Break on Tuesday, November 26th at 6:00pm. The fobs of residents living in these halls will turn off at this time. Students are expected to have left the residence hall before fobs are shut off. Upper-level student halls (except Niejadlik Hall) remain open during the break, however any student staying on campus after Tuesday, November 26th at 6:00pm are required to complete a Thanksgiving Break Housing Application found in the MyHousing Portal.

Students With a Tuesday Night Class: Students who have a Tuesday night class that either ends or starts after 6:00pm are NOT expected to skip class. Students should complete their pre-break expectations and be packed before class and then should attend class. These students will have up to a half hour after their class releases to then leave the residence hall for break. To request this extension, submit a Thanksgiving Break Housing Application in the MyHousing Portal.

Make Your Travel Plans Now: It’s never too early to start planning and scheduling rides or making travel arrangements for when the residence halls close. It is also suggested to create a weather back-up plan in case plans are impacted by inclement weather. Should there be a weather-related-change to when halls close, the University will make an announcement.

Before Leaving for Break: Students leaving for break must complete the following before departing from campus. This is to prevent any issues of cleanliness or pests. All rooms are going to be entered and inspected by Housing Staff after Thanksgiving Break starts.

·        Remove all trash and recycling and dispose of in the dumpsters outside.

Residents will be charged $25 per bag removed by staff.

·        Unplug all electronics except personal refrigerators or campus-provided appliances.

·        Vacuum/sweep floors

·        Wipe down the counters, sinks, desks, shelves etc

·        Remove all open perishable foods.

Leftovers, fruit, veggies, open cans/boxes of food

·        Take home or wash your dirty laundry and linens.

·        Bring home anything on the prohibited items list.

Visit your hall’s office before leaving for break to pick up anything you’ve had confiscated and don’t bring it back to campus! All confiscated items will be disposed of when the halls close for Winter Break on December 13th.

Thanksgiving Break Housing: Any student who needs to be on campus between November 26th at 6:00pm to December 1st at 10:00am must complete a Thanksgiving Break Housing Application. The application is live and can be found in the MyHousing Portal. Requests for Thanksgiving Break housing are due no later than Friday, November 22nd at 4:00pm.

Students are expected to check out of housing with a Housing Staff Member within 24-hours of their last final exam, or before December 13th at 6:00pm, whichever occurs first.

Fall 2024 Final Exams: The Fall 2024 Final Exam Schedule can be found HERE.

Make Your Travel Plans Now: Have your student review their class syllabi and the Fall 2024 Final Exam Schedule to plan when they need to check out of housing for Winter Break. Start making your travel plans now and create a weather back up plan in case we are impacted by inclement weather. Should there be a weather-related-change to when halls close, the University will make an announcement.

Before Leaving for Break: Students are not expected to completely move out of their housing assignment unless they are requesting a Spring 2025 room change, graduating, or transferring. Students may leave some belongings in their housing assignment, but it’s best to bring home any valuables. Student will also receive instructions on what they need to do before leaving for break and how to properly check out with a Housing Staff Member. This information will be emailed, posted to housing assignment doors, posted in halls, and floor/building meetings will be scheduled to ensure all are informed.
