Designating California

Bob Hope Patriotic Hall, Los Angeles

Built in 1926, this ten-story building was once the tallest in Los Angeles. It was designed in the Italian Renaissance Revival style by Allied Architects Association of Los Angeles, who designed other public buildings in Los Angeles, including the Hall of Justice and USC Medical Center. The hall was built to serve veterans of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, and World War I.

The front of the building features three distinct segments of architectural design, each representing a different theme and War eras: age (Civil War and Grand Army of the Republic), maturity (Spanish American War veterans), and youth (American Legion, looking to the future).

Military and California-inspired details embellish the front of the hall, including a series of six cartouches. Each carved stone oval depicts a unique scene, including a federal eagle, shields, and the State of California Seal.

The interior of the hall features murals, marble finishes, and decorative plaster. A library on the ground floor and a triple-height gymnasium on the tenth floor are available for use. The hall also displays historic military artifacts, including weapons, flags, and uniforms belonging to Winston Churchill, General George Patton, and General Norman Schwarzkopf.

The hall housed service members on leave during World War II, hosting performances by Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, and Dorothy Lamour. Later, the hall served as an Army and Air Force processing center during the Korean War. In 2006, the rehabilitation of the hall began, with the City of Los Angeles raising over $75 million for the restoration. In 2014, the project won the Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation Award.

Originally named "Patriotic Hall," the hall was rededicated as the Bob Hope Patriotic Hall in 2004 in honor of Hope's over fifty years of entertaining the troops. While the hall was originally built to serve Civil War veterans, it has since expanded its scope of services. Today, the hall houses veteran organizations and county services for veterans.

Bob Hope Patriotic Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Resources on April 2, 2025. It joins the ranks of other Veterans' historic sites in California. Click on the button below to see other listed Veteran sites.
