Even while living in foster homes or on the streets, Charles Harrington was drawn to cooking, drawing inspiration from Food Network celebrities such as Rachel Ray and Bobby Flay. So when Harrington tired of the seemingly endless stream of minimum wage jobs and enrolled at Grossmont College, the Culinary Arts program was his first stop.
"It changed my life," Harrington said.

 November 9 groundbreaking of Center for Water Studies at Cuyamaca College
A groundbreaking ceremony for a state-of-the-art Center for Water Studies aimed at training the next generation of water and wastewater system industry professionals will be held Thursday, November 9 at 9:30 a.m. next to the "L" building at the Cuyamaca College campus, 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway, in Rancho San Diego.
The first phase of the project, the Field Operations Skills Yard, will include a fully operational, above-ground water distribution and an underground wastewater collection system that will enable students to apply their science, technology, engineering and mathematics knowledge in a learning-by-doing, career-preparation environment.   
The public is invited to attend.

Sunday, Nov. 5 2 p.m.: Grossmont Piano Studies present Pianist Bryan Verhoye. Grossmont College Recital Hall Building 26, Room 220. $10 general admission, $8 seniors, $5 student.
 
Sunday, Nov. 5 6:30 p.m. Grossmont College Music Department presents the Justin Grinnell Jazz Group featuring Grossmont College faculty and special guests. Grossmont College Recital Hall, Building 26, Room 220. $10 general admission, $8 seniors, $5 students.
 
Tuesday, Nov. 7, 7:30 p.m. The Grossmont College College Concert Band under the direction of conductor Russ Sperling presents its fall concert. Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Theater. $10 general admission, $8 seniors/faculty, $5 students.
 
Wednesday, Nov. 8 2:30 p.m. The Grossmont Guitar Ensemble, directed by Fred Benedetti, is offering a free concert. It will be held at the Grossmont College Recital Hall, Building 26, Room 220.
 
Thursday, Nov. 9 7:30 p.m. The Rob Thorsen Trio, featuring bassist Rob Thorsen, piano extraordinaire Hugo Suarez and drummer Richard Sellers, will perform contemporary jazz. Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Theater, $8 general admission, $5 for students and seniors.
 
Thursday, Nov. 16 7:30 p.m. Zimbeat, a San Diego-based ensemble, will perform the dynamic village music of Zimbabwe based on the Shona people's traditional instrument, the mbira Dzavadzimu. Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Theater, $8 general admission, $5 for students and seniors.
 
Monday, Nov. 27 7:30 p.m. The Cuyamaca College Rock, Pop and Soul Ensemble will perform the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, the debut solo album by the American singer and rapper. Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Theater, $8 general admission, $5 for students and seniors.
 
Thursday, Nov. 30 7:30 p.m. The Cuyamaca College Choir will perform contemporary and standard works in collaboration with the Cuyamaca College Concert Band. Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Theater, $8 general admission, $5 for students and seniors.

Social Gathering at Cuyamaca College celebrates Native American culture

Cuyamaca College's 7th annual Social Gathering on Tuesday, Nov. 21 from 1 to 2 p.m. celebrates American Indian culture with participants from tribes locally and elsewhere. The Social Gathering, in honor of Native American Heritage month, is a celebration of dance, song and story that holds deep significance culturally and spiritally for American Indian people.

The guest speaker will be Richard Crane of the Crow/Dine tribe, and Chuck Cadotte of the Hunkpapa Band-Lakota will condut the blessing. Terry Hinsley of the Shawnee tribe will be drumming to accompany the Soaring Eagles dance.

It is hosted by the Native American Student Alliance, the Associated Student Government for Cuyamaca College, Student Affairs, and Equity and Engagment.
