2023 Board members sworn in at Installation
Welcome and congratulations to incoming officers, board directors and jubilarians, who were honored Nov. 13 at the CDS Installation of Officers for 2023.

The 2023 CDS officers are: Michael G. Durbin, president; David B. Lewis, Jr., president-elect; Denise D. Hale, secretary; Philip L. Schefke, vice president; and Victoria A. Ursitti, treasurer.

Joining the Board of Directors are: David Rosenbaum, North Suburban Branch Director; Joseph V. Baldassano, Northwest Suburban Branch Director; and Neil Singh, Englewood Branch Director. Coming to the board as the 2023 New Dentist Board member is Brittaney Hill, nominated from the Kenwood/Hyde Park Branch.

We are grateful to the Jubilarians who attended the ceremony to mark their 50th year as a Chicago Dental Society member. We are honored!
Patient marijuana use and oral care
The ADA recently released a study showing how dentists are handling patients who are using marijuana and arrive for dental appointments high. The numbers reveal the prevalence of marijuana use after 19 states have approved recreational use and 37 legalized medical marijuana use.

Two ADA trend research studies - one of 557 dentists and one of a representative selection of 1,006 consumers -- revealed:

  • 39% of patients reported using marijuana, with smoking the most common form of use.
  • 25% of respondents said they vaped, and of those respondents, 51% vaped marijuana.
  • 56% of surveyed dentists reported limiting treatment to patients who were high.
  • 46% of dentists reported sometimes needing to increase anesthesia to treat patients who needed care because of how marijuana and anesthesia impact the central nervous system.

CDC: Waterline safety alert, new opioid prescribing guidelines

CDS names Scientific Program Director
Dr. Cheryl Mora will join the CDS staff as Director of Scientific Programs in early 2023, replacing Dr. Ted Borris, who is retiring after eight years in the position.

In her role, Dr. Mora will lead development of the scientific programming for the annual Midwinter Meeting, selecting speakers and course topics in collaboration with the Midwinter Meeting Subcommittee, as well as other CDS continuing education programming.

Dr. Mora graduated with her dental degree from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry in 1991. She has been very active in the Academy of General Dentistry and received her Mastership Award in 2015. She is past president of the Illinois Academy of General Dentistry and has served as chair of its Continuing Education Committee. With CDS, she served as Program Chair for the 2021 Midwinter Meeting. 

In another personnel move, Will Conkis, director of publications, will retire Dec. 31, capping a 19-year tenure at CDS.
