Ontario law requires that working smoke alarms be located on every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas. Failure to comply with the Fire Code smoke alarm requirements could result in fines.

• For added protection, install a smoke alarm in every bedroom.
• Change the battery in each smoke alarm once a year or whenever the low-battery warning sounds.
• Test smoke alarms monthly.
• Vacuum the exterior of the smoke alarm using a soft bristle attachment.
• Replace smoke alarms that are more than 10-years old.
• Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing, testing and maintaining smoke alarms.

Fact: Smoke alarms can increase your chances of surviving a fire by up to 50 per cent.

Buck is a sweet and playful 3-year-old male lab mix who's eager to find his forever home. He is house trained and extremely food motivated, making him a great candidate for training!

At this time Buck has not been tested with other dogs or cats, but with slow introduction we believe he would do well.

Did you know the City now has an electric Zamboni?



We continue to expand our fleet of electic vehicles (EVs) where possible to replace end-of-life cycle light fleet vehicles with electric models, to continue working towards Goal 9 in the Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP) - electrify City fleet.

To date, the EV fleet is made up of 12 light duty vehicles, two golf carts, one Zamboni and nine level 2 charging stations. Corporate Security and Bylaw Services saved $21,000 in fuel in one year by using an electric vehicle.

March of Dimes Canada, through a nomination by the local March of Dimes branch, has awarded the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) board with their Community Changemaker of the Year Award. This award recognizes GSDC’s outstanding two years of support of the Community Economic Development Fund (CED) for Project SEARCH.

Project SEARCH provides students with disabilities valuable on-the-job training and experience. In Greater Sudbury, the program was launched in 2022 by the March of Dimes and currently operates with two host organizations: Health Sciences North and the City of Greater Sudbury. The program is dedicated to supporting our community's workforce and promoting inclusivity.

In October through Project SEARCH, eight interns from the Rainbow District School board were welcomed to Pioneer Manor, to take part in a mix of classes and hands-on learning, gaining valuable skills in various areas of the long-term care home. The internship will equip students with practical experience while encouraging meaningful interactions between the interns and the residents at Pioneer Manor.

Through GSDC’s leadership and collaboration with community stakeholders, the initiative not only empowers young people with disabilities but also fosters entrepreneurship, stimulates economic growth and strengthens the community.

Youth aged 13 to 18 are encouraged to apply to the City of Greater Sudbury’s new Youth Advisory Panel.

Joining the panel is a great opportunity for young residents to actively contribute to their community and offer valuable insights into City programs and services.

Members of the panel will play a crucial role in providing insights into municipal initiatives and fostering youth engagement in local governance while gaining valuable leadership experience.

Applications will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, November 22.

A Smart Outdoor Battery Recycling Container was recently launched as part of a one-year pilot project in collaboration with Environmental 360 Solutions Ltd.

This new container was placed in the York St. parking lot at Bell Park, a conveniently accessible location for residents to properly dispose of their household batteries 24/7.

The smart container is equipped with a built-in fire suppression system and features advanced sensors to monitor temperature and material volumes.

The City of Greater Sudbury is very pleased to have been chosen as one of the 10 locations for this pilot program. Diverting batteries from landfills protects the environment, helps prevent facility or collection truck fires and conserve non-renewable resources.
