Meditation Workshop

Become an active meditator by practicing visualization and mindfulness. This meditation workshop will teach you basic brain activities and how they promote or inhibit the stress response and wire our thought process. Wendy Dolen is an Exercise Physiologist and Wellness Coordinator for MHealthy, Health and Well-Being Services at the University of Michigan. For over 20 years she has focused her professional efforts on teaching people how to reach their healthy lifestyle potential.

Maddie's Monthly Fitness Tip: Turmeric
You may know of turmeric from its vibrant yellow hue or as the main spice that makes up curry. If you haven't heard of turmeric, it is a spice native to South/Southeast Asia and has been used for thousands of years, both for culinary and medicinal purposes. The primary compound in turmeric responsible for its health benefits is curcumin, which makes up approximately 5% of the spice. This compound has been found to interact with many molecular targets and pathways. As a result, curcumin has been shown to have many beneficial effects in neurological disorders, chronic heart diseases, inflammatory diseases, and certain cancers. Wondering how to incorporate turmeric into your diet so that you can reap the benefits of this superfood? Don't fret! Check out these two recipes:
(I have made both and know for a fact that they are delicious and easy to make!)

Golden Milk Latte 
Serves 2
Ingredients:
* 2 cups (any type) milk (turmeric is fat-soluble and absorbs into the body better with fats)
* 1 tsp turmeric powder
* 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
* 1/8 tsp ground ginger
* 1 tsp vanilla extract
* 1-2 tsp raw honey (sweeten to taste)
* optional- pinch/grind of black pepper
Directions:
1. Blend all ingredients in the blender for 10-20 seconds
2. Heat mixture, either on the stovetop or in the microwave (I divide the mixture into two mugs and heat in the microwave for 1.5-2 minutes)
3. Optional: Use a milk frother to achieve the perfect latte consistency.
4. Enjoy!

Curry-Roasted Butternut Squash and Chickpeas
Serves 2-4
Ingredients:
* 2 medium butternut squash (or other favorite seasonal squash), cubed
* 1 can of chickpeas, rinsed and dried
* ¼ cup of avocado oil (or other oil that can withstand high temperatures)
* 1 tablespoon of mild curry powder
* ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper (exclude if you do not like spicy food)
* salt and pepper
* 1.5 cups of plain yogurt (I used whole fat Greek yogurt, which is very thick!)
* handful of chopped cilantro
* 1-3 tablespoons of lemon juice
* 1-3 tablespoons of water (if needed to make sauce more liquid)

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400o F. IN a large bowl, toss butternut squash, chickpeas, oil, curry, and cayenne. Season with salt and pepper Spread mixture onto a large baking sheet and roast for 45 minutes-1 hour. (until chickpeas are crispy)
2. In a separate bowl, mix the yogurt with cilantro, lemon juice, and water if needed. Season with salt and pepper.
3. Remove squash and chickpeas from oven. Add the yogurt mixture to your curried vegetables and enjoy!
