Plantation Preserve Birding

South Florida Audubon Society's Paddy Cunningham invites TAS to join her for an afternoon tour of Plantation Preserve in central Broward County. The preserve is on Broward Blvd., about 0.7 miles east of University Drive. Meet Paddy at 1:30pm at the trailhead past the playground. No fee.

The State of Florida is attempting to take back one of America's National Wildlife Refuges: The Arthur R. Marshall
Loxahatchee
National Wildlife Refuge in Palm Beach County. This enchanting sanctuary provides critical habitat to 250 species of birds -- including the Everglades' largest wading bird colony -- and hosts more than 7,000 active nests.
In a move that has long been encouraged by the state's powerful sugar industry, Florida has begun the process of evicting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from the site. If successful, their eviction will eliminate federal wildlife protections on the 144,000 -- acre refuge, which presently embodies one of the last remnants of the historic Everglades.

 Amendment 1 is on the ballot. Our partners at Southern Alliance for Clean Energy (SACE) don't want voters to be misled by its confusing language. It is

a pro-solar measure. Rather it is allegedly backed by the monopoly utilities that seek to stifle solar energy and keep Floridians captive power consumers.

to enlighten voters at polling locations. Together, Floridians have the power to defeat Amendment 1!
SACE urges Floridians not to support Amendment 1 for these reasons:
1. It is funded by Florida's utilities to protect their monopoly & limit customer-owned solar.
2. It would pave the way for barriers that would penalize solar customers.
3. It misleads voters by promising rights & protections that Florida citizens already have.

Ault, the esteemed Professor and Chair at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science's Department of Marine Ecosystems, will lead a thoughtful preservation discussion hinged on a single salient question: Is the Marine Reserve in Biscayne National Park supported by coral reef ecosystem and marine fisheries science? Dr. Ault's fishery systems science approach is the recognized standard for coral reef ecosystems of the Florida Keys, U.S. Caribbean and tropical Pacific Ocean.

The period parlor at our historic Doc Thomas House headquarters is transformed into a vibrant art gallery as Miami-Dade College students present their exceptional works in an exhibit titled "Pine Rockland Drawings." Join Art Professor Claudia Scalise and 19 exceptional young artists for their opening night reception. The habitat-inspired exhibit will hang through November in our newly designated "Florida Heritage Site" 1932 cottage. Art Nite also features our Donation Bird Bar!
Bonus: Park for free on our Steinberg Nature Center grounds via our 55th Avenue entry gate and use TAS as your ArtWalk home base for a gallery-hopping stroll into town.

. The birds would virtually be lost without the generosity of spirit displayed by owner-founders Chef Brendan Connor and his sister Kristin Connor. The two have been perennial TAS community partners since becoming our neighbors in 2011.
In short order

became a "Summer Dine Out" partner, and in 2012 the siblings helped TAS launch the "Walk in the Woods with Wine & Whisk" fundraising series, donating cooking expertise and helping fill patron seats at the convivial tables under the TAS chickee hut.
If you have not experienced Chef Brendan's deft cuisine -- he cooks up a bounty of fresh local ingredients with Southern flair and a nod to our region's Latin and Caribbean influences -- then you must sample the
