Now at Howe: August 1, 2026 | | New Program Series for Individuals with Dementia Begins August 3 | |
Join Howe Librarians and Dartmouth Geriatric Center of Excellence staff for a “travel series” that uses books, images, short videos, and guided conversation to spark personal storytelling, emotional memory, sensory engagement, and expression. Journeys & Stories: A Passport to Memory is for individuals with dementia and their care partners.
Our first program takes place on Monday, August 3, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. We will "travel" to Joshua Tree. This program is free, but registration is required.
These programs are funded by a generous grant from RUSA - Reference and User Services Association, a division of the American Library Association.

From the artist: "The paintings exhibited span almost 45 years. I like to experiment with different materials together and see what they can create; like a science experiment or even cooking. I often leave the canvasses outside in the rain sun and wind. Living things are subjected to an external environment so why can’t we see what Nature does to art."

Hybrid: Searching for the Oldest Animal Fossils
Wednesday, August 5
from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
with Justin Strauss, Associate Professor of Earth Sciences at Dartmouth College
Cosponsored with the Hanover Conservancy
| |
Animals are a relatively late addition to Planet Earth. Professor Justin Strauss of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Dartmouth will guide us through the earliest evidence for animals in the fossil record and what hypotheses exist for driving early animal evolution. In addition to this historical narrative, Professor Strauss will also take us along for a ride into his research in the remote mountains of northwestern Canada, where the search for these fossils also happens to be in some of the last vestiges of wilderness on our planet.
