AEHS Alumni Association Outreach Efforts Continue to Expand

Facebook

Hopefully, you’re aware that there’s a Facebook group, AEHS Alumni Association.  I’d encourage you to join and to participate.  The late Fred Shelley created this group and served as its sole Administrator and Moderator (don’t know how he did it!)  We now have several individuals managing the group, reviewing requests to join (group is limited to those with a direct connection to our high school) and overseeing content (please do not advertise products for sale here).  The group is growing and it’s a wonderful way to share experiences, past, present, and future.

Website (aehshof.com)

Beverly Wright (’70) is our webmaster.  She’s done a marvelous job of re-design—take a look.  It’s important to keep the content changing and up to date.  If you have information you believe ought to be posted to the website, please send it to [email protected].

The website features content regarding the Athletic Hall of Fame and the Alumni Association.  If you have difficulty navigating within the website, contact [email protected]

Nucleus Alumni News  (this newsletter)

Published monthly (or almost) since 2014, the newsletter will be ceasing publication.  In spite of frequent requests for help regarding preparing articles, scanning other Facebook groups related to Einstein High School (i.e., specific classes, interests), no one has stepped forward.  Instead, look for messages on specific topics throughout the year.  Happy to continue adding to the Alumni Association membership list to receive correspondence; just send in names, email addresses, and (if possible) year of graduation to [email protected].

Alumni Association Has a New Scholarship

Beginning in 2024, the Alumni Association will award the Michael D. Wolf Memorial Scholarship.  Its purpose is to help a deserving Einstein graduate cover part of the costs for attending college. The recipient will receive a scholarship in the amount of $2,500.

Michael D. Wolf graduated as a member of the Class of 1964.  He was elected as the school’s first student government president.  The scholarship will be funded through the generosity of his wife, Barbara Wolf; it will be a grant of $2,500.  She hopes that the recipient will possess the following attributes reflecting those of her husband:  leadership, entrepreneurship, ethic of hard work, and worthiness of respect by all.

The Alumni Association will work with the College and Career Center Coordinator to select the recipient.  The scholarship will be presented at the May Awards Assembly.

Thank you, Barbara, for honoring your husband’s memory in this way.

What Alumni Association Funds Do

Since its inception way back in 2013, the Alumni Association has run (since 2014)  an annual fundraising campaign in March (Albert Einstein’s birthday month) to raise funds to support Alumni Association expenses. Most money is used for the annual “First in the Family” scholarships (given to two students and reaching the amount of $3,000/scholarship last year), and, more recently, half of the Rob Westwood Memorial Scholarship (the other half contributed by the Athletic Hall of Fame).  The next largest category of spending is to support our Arts Hall of Fame, specifically the awards given to the inductees and the cost of the reception in their honor.  Next are contributions to AEHS that have included:

  • Quantum ads to support the yearbook
  • Ads in theater programs (fall and spring) to support those productions
  • Contributions to fund the literary magazine
  • Contributions to fund purchase of supplies/equipment for band/orchestra
  • Purchase of supplemental items going to academic departments (e.g., math, ESOL)
  • Gifts to the school (courtyard table/benches)

Finally, a small amount of funds is used for communication expenses.

As 2023 closes, it seems an appropriate time for us to celebrate the contributions we have made to students and to our alma mater.  By now, all 2023 contributors should have acknowledgement letters/messages from APLOS (for online).  These contributions are tax deductible.  If you’ve not received yours, please email me at: [email protected].

While donations can be made ANYTIME AT ALL online at www.aehshof.com (under Alumni Association), get ready for the 2024 solicitation next March.

Class Reunion Information Requested, Please

The Alumni Association wants to help get the word out about upcoming reunions through website posting, Facebook messages, and direct emails.  Coming in 2024 may be reunions of classes ending in 4 (for 10th year events) or 9 (for 5th year events).  Send information to:  [email protected].

Sports Update

Too soon to report on sports results for Titan teams in this edition (somewhat earlier than usual).  Scores and information are available on several social media platforms.  (Wrestling on Instagram, Boys and Girls Basketball, Indoor track on “X”, and the AD also posts results on “X”).

Nomination Process for the Alumni Association Arts Hall of Fame Begins Soon

Look for an announcement coming soon regarding the 2024 Arts Hall of Fame nomination form.  It will provide a link to the form that, if at all possible, should be completed online.  Nominators (and you may nominate yourself) are encouraged to also provide links to websites and supplemental materials.

We’ll hold a celebration for those selected in 2023 and 2024 next spring.  In the meantime, if you’re interested in current Arts Hall of Fame members, go to the website www.aehshof.com and click on Arts Hall of Fame under the Alumni Association tab.

We regret to announce the passing of Eric Franco and on behalf of the AEHS community extend our condolences to his family and friends.

Eric Franco

Class of 1995

Eric Brian Franco, of Burtonsville, Maryland passed away peacefully on November 20, 2023. Eric's legacy is one that has had a broad and positive reach.  Those of who went to school with him knew him as that entertaining prankster from the large family of a Franco siblings that also went to Einstein.

He was also known for being a proud, doting father to his son and daughter.   But, for most of his adult life, he was known simply as 'Coach Eric' to the Olney community.  His true passion was coaching, and mentoring, youth athletes to help them reach their full potential on the field and off.  His accomplishments as the coach of the Olney Under-12 football team are legendary.  His last 3 years as the coach before retiring from that role, the Olney Bears won the Under-12 Super Bowl each year.   Many of the players on the powerful football teams of Sherwood High School got their first instruction from Eric.

His legacy will be secure with all of us.  Rest In Power, Eric.

Editor’s note: Thanks to Patrick Randall for providing this information.

Please continue to inform us of the deaths of Einstein alumni. Obituaries and photos are especially appreciated. Feedback lets us know that such information, while sad, is important for our community. Please send to [email protected]
