THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME

Numb Fingers?

We can help!

Thoracic outlet syndrome (T.O.S.)  occurs when the blood vessels or nerves in the space between you collarbone and first rib become compressed.  This can cause a variety of symptoms such as pain in your neck and shoulders, numbness or tingling into your arm or fingers, weakening grip, and cold fingers, hands, or arms.

Common causes of T.O.S include:

1) Repetitive injuries from work or sports related activities

2) Trauma/car accident or fall

3) Poor sleeping position

4) Pregnancy

5) Having an extra rib

The most effective treatment for T.O.S. is combing chiropractic adjustments with massage therapy and physical therapy. This targets not only the mechanical/joint dysfunction in the area, but also the muscle & soft tissue dysfunction.

Occasionally, T.O.S can be mistaken for tennis elbow. However, the symptoms of tennis elbow are confined to the elbow, forearm and wrist, but do not involve the neck and shoulder. Tennis elbow occurs when the tendons in your elbow are overworked and sprain/strained. Much of the pain is concentrated on the bony bump on the outside of your elbow where the forearm muscles attach. Adjusting, trigger point therapy, stretching, icing and rest can help to speed healing.

What is the difference between Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, Carpal Tunnel, and Tennis Elbow?

A key to understanding the difference between these three diagnosis, is to understand a little bit of anatomy.  Pain in our body, as a general rule, goes from the source down toward the extremity.  So, for each of these ailments, we look above the area in pain to source the cause.

For Thoracic Outlet Syndrome a common cause of entrapment is the scalene muscle.  See our video on this weeks newsletter for ways to stretch this.  With tennis elbow, there is a muscle on the lateral outside portion of your forearm that surrounds a nerve that goes to your hand.  It is the source of a lot of misdiagnosed carpal tunnel patients.  Carpal tunnel is an archway of bone in the wrist that surrounds 9 different tendons, nerves, and blood vessels that go to the hand.  When you lose the space for those items to operate, your symptoms increase and/or you lose function to your hands.

These are three diagnoses we see in our office every week.  The solution and resolution of symptoms can commonly be conquered by the patient at home.  Come in now to learn how to conservatively solve these all too common problems.
