In this column I have regularly ignored the adage that one should not talk about politics, money or religion in polite company. While I have avoided any deep faith discussions, politics and policy are frequent topics here and today money is front and center. Nurture KC relies on three primary sources of funding: federal (HRSA-funded Healthy Start), state (Kansas and Missouri government) and local (government, private foundations, civic philanthropy and membership giving).
Searching for and securing funding is a constant for nonprofit leaders because it is the key to accomplishing our mission. The funding landscape has become more challenging each year, with organizations vying for stagnant or dwindling resources. While we compete nationally, across the state and in Kansas City, nonprofits unite around a belief that the social safety net should be a priority worthy of more reliable and coordinated investment. One recent experience resulted in 6,000 grant applications for 250 total awards. Although not luck-based, it certainly feels like a lottery with long odds. Locally, foundations and other funding entities change structure, funding philosophies and priorities and personnel with some regularity. Adapting to those changes while remaining true to our core work is a balance that must be maintained.
Nurture KC has expanded program offerings to serve more Kansas Citians over the past year. This expansion has required additional funding. As we have secured new funding partners, it is always my hope that we continue to evolve alongside community leaders that recognize Nurture KC is a wise investment.
