A crib. A car seat. A monthly diaper allotment. These are just a few of the tangible items that we provide to our Healthy Start families. While the program impact is so much more than this, it is important that we address and meet the immediate needs faced by families as they welcome a new child into the fold.
Our community health worker model embraces the journey, working with families to establish short-term, intermediate and long-term goals designed to give them agency in determining their family trajectory. While this is a national program, the uniqueness of Healthy Start is its local application, recognizing that family wellbeing depends on families leading and the organization responding and walking beside them.
Over the past few years, this response has come in the form of providing doula services, free transportation to necessary appointments and services, access to healthy food and free counseling. Nurture KC will continue to seek and hopefully fulfill the gaps that families grapple with, easing some of their burdens.
Every Giving Tuesday I am reminded of these goals and our underlying mission to improve maternal and infant health and wellbeing in Kansas City. The intentionality of this day of giving stands apart from a consumer-driven focus, shifting to gratitude and recognition of our neighbors and the community that deserves special attention on Giving Tuesday and throughout the year. I hope you will join me in supporting Healthy Start families by visiting www.NurtureKC.org and prioritizing these babies!
Thank you for your continued investment in Nurture KC and the families we serve.
