January marks the beginning of the legislative session in both Kansas and Missouri. The citizen legislature that is the hallmark and culture of both states relies on the experience and expertise of those who work daily on the issues that are considered during the condensed, four-month legislative session. More importantly, groups like Nurture KC give voice to those who are most directly impacted by the policies that ultimately become law.
While we are not a lobbying entity, we do monitor activities in the statehouses and weigh in on proposals related to maternal and infant health and wellbeing. This responsibility is as critical as the direct services we provide on a daily basis, broadly shaping the circumstances for families in Kansas City. For example, the passage of extended Medicaid coverage for postpartum mothers in Kansas last year will have an outsized impact on maternal wellness and could improve maternal morbidity and mortality for years to come.
Nurture KC approved its 2023 legislative priorities in December 2022. By design, the agenda is narrow, focusing on issues most relevant to our mission and most likely to be considered during the session. Topping the list is extended Medicaid postpartum coverage in Missouri, an issue that has bipartisan support. In addition, Nurture KC prioritizes maintaining current vaccine schedules, processes and oversight, opposing efforts to dilute this bedrock of disease prevention.
Check out our members page on the Nurture KC web site to view the priorities in each state and track bills of interest throughout the legislative session. Your knowledge and involvement in the legislative process is vital in establishing laws that benefit mothers and children.
