January 2025 Update

Happy New Year! The Kansas and Missouri legislatures are preparing to kick off their legislative sessions and judging by the scope and relevance of pre-filed bills, there are several proposed policies that could impact maternal and infant health.

Nurture KC has identified four priority issues for each state for the 2025 legislative sessions based on importance to family wellbeing, timeliness of consideration, and broad support across many interested advocates. This is not an exhaustive list of issues that we will follow but represents where our primary focus will be. We are continuing an emphasis on maternal mental health as we seek to improve birth outcomes and the trajectory of children.

Missouri Priorities

  • Adopt a women’s health bill that allows for access to long-lasting birth control and additional testing for congenital syphilis.
  • Participate in efforts to expand access to paid parental, family and medical leave in Missouri.
  • Operationalize and fund maternal mental health screenings in the perinatal and postpartum period, providing resources to care when needed.
  • Promote and protect existing vaccine requirements and recommendations.

Kansas Priorities

  • Participate in efforts to expand access to paid parental, family and medical leave in Kansas.
  • Operationalize and fund maternal mental health screenings in the perinatal and postpartum period, providing resources to care when needed.
  • Promote and protect existing vaccine requirements and recommendations.
  • Invest in reducing maternal and infant morbidity and mortality by funding community organizations specializing in this area.
