A Note from Our CEO

Greetings!

Last month, I traveled to Egypt where I wandered through ancient temples and tombs. Everywhere I looked, the walls were covered with hieroglyphics - images of birds, reeds, ankhs, and scarabs. At first, they were just beautiful pictures. But over time, I learned to decipher them. I began to recognize patterns, to understand what the symbols meant. And then, suddenly, I could read them! What had been a jumble of images became a story. I felt absolutely elated.

That moment reminded me what a profound joy it is to learn to read - to unlock understanding, to make meaning from symbols that once seemed mysterious.

At LEAP, we nurture that joy of literacy every day. In our children's center, our youngest students fall in love with books. They learn to write their names, to recognize sounds, to connect letters with meaning. We watch for that moment when their faces light up - when suddenly, they can read a word they couldn't read before. That spark of joy, that sense of unlocking something new, is what we're cultivating.

As we move into 2026, I invite you to think about the learning that brings you joy. What are you curious about? What would you love to understand more deeply? What brings you that same elation I felt reading hieroglyphics in an ancient tomb?

Here's to the joy of learning, at every age.

Warmly,

Lori Lander Goodman

Chief Executive Officer

Introducing the Next LEAP Mentorship Program

Next LEAP launched in 2025 with a simple but powerful idea: every child deserves a place to feel seen, supported, and confident. By pairing students with consistent, caring mentors after-school, the program helps 5th and 6th graders navigate identity, belonging, and peer dynamics while building strong relationships. In its first year, Next LEAP served 49 students at two elementary schools.

Volunteer to Pack Diapers

Join us on Tuesday, January 27th, from 10-11:30am in Goleta to help pack diapers for local babies and their families. LEAP runs the only registered Diaper Bank in Santa Barbara County, and we send out over 7,000 diapers every month! This makes a huge difference for our families that need extra support.
