NURTURING YOUNG BOOK LOVERS

Are you raising a reader? Talking and reading aloud to your child are the most important things you can do to promote language development and reading skills – great predictors of school success.

Redwood City Public Library’s storytimes are designed to develop literacy, inspire a love of reading and encourage social connections in your little ones. Each storytime includes reading fun, inclusive books, interactive songs, a welcoming environment, and time to socialize and play. Our storytimes are age appropriate with book and activity selections tailored to children’s development. We encourage caregivers to choose the storytime appropriate to their child’s age.

Storytimes at all locations begin on September 2. Go to our storytimes page to learn more

CITY CORNER

Explore What’s New in the Redwood City Open Data Portal

In 2024, Redwood City launched the Open Data Portal to give residents, businesses and community members easy access to tools that make learning about the City simple and engaging. From zoning and park locations to council districts, infrastructure projects and local dining options – the portal puts a wide range of information at your fingertips.

Since launching, we have continued to expand the portal with new tools and features designed to help you explore your city in new ways. Here are a few of the latest additions:

  • The ACS 5-Year Estimates Explorer, where you can learn about population, housing and other social characteristics of Redwood City.
  • The Building Permits Dashboard has interactive charts that show trends over time for the number of permits applied for, issued and completed. You can also see average permit processing times and top permit type.
  • The Road Closures app shows all active street closures in real time, with details on duration, location and type of work. It’s a useful tool for commuters, visitors and event planners alike.

We regularly update the Open Data Portal with new tools, features and interactive maps, making it easier than ever to stay informed, plan ahead and learn more about our city. Visit www.RedwoodCity.org/Data today to explore!

NEWS FROM THE FRIENDS

Friends of Redwood City Public Library need additional volunteers in the Downtown Library Bookstore to cover two shifts -- Mondays, 6-8pm, and Thursdays, 6-8pm. This is a chance for local high school and college students or adults to volunteer. If you enjoy being surrounded by books, puzzles, CDs and DVDS while you are reading/shopping for gifts or doing homework, this opportunity will help the Friends raise money for Library programs throughout the year. Bring a snack and water, monitor activities and sales, and chat with customers in the store to help out. If you are a book lover, this is a great gig! For more information please email: friendsofrwclibrary@gmail.com

NEWS FROM THE FOUNDATION

Celebrate 2025 Banned Books Week at the Redwood City Library Foundation’s 4th Annual Upscale Pub Crawl

Wednesday, October 8, 2025, 5-9pm

Location: Check in at the Downtown Library

The theme for 2025 Banned Books Week and for the RCLF 4th Annual Upscale Pub Crawl is Censorship is so 1984..Read for Your Rights” inspired by “1984,” George Orwell’s novel about the perils of censorship.  After checking in at the Downtown Library, visit participating establishments downtown and enjoy discounted drinks and small bite snacks. Each location will feature a banned book, and Foundation representatives will be present to answer questions about censorship.

Early bird tickets are $40 (or $45 with commemorative t-shirt) until Sept 12. Tickets after Sept. 12 will be $50. Proceeds support valuable library initiatives.

Join us to fight attempts to censor books in schools and libraries, to patronize downtown merchants, and to support the library.
